I'm trying to get the gui version of emacs of my system which is primarily kde4.
I've set specific USE flags for emacs but everytime I emerge emacs I end up with the console only version (i.e. emacs and emacs -nw are the same).
It seems like my USE flags are correct. I must be missing something??
These are the packages that would be merged, in order:
Code: | Calculating dependencies... done!
[ebuild N ] app-editors/emacs-23.1-r2 USE="alsa dbus gif gpm gtk jpeg png sound source svg tiff toolkit-scroll-bars xft xpm -X -Xaw3d -gzip-el -hesiod -kerberos -m17n-lib -motif"
[ebuild N ] virtual/emacs-23 |

You have "-X" in those use flags. _________________ Time is what keeps everything from happening all at once. |

Why not emerge app-editors/xemacs ?
There is also app-xemacs/xemacs-packages-all
have a look with eix:
emerge eix and run eix-update if you need. |

I guess I misunderstood those flags. I thought GNU Emacs w/ gtk was different from XEmacs and that the X flag wasn't relevant if I used the gtk flag. |

GNU Emacs w/ gtk is different from XEmacs. Still, the X flag is required AFAIK. _________________ "I'm just very selective about the reality I choose to accept." -- Calvin |

Understandable. Strangely enough, xemacs can be built with -X also B-) _________________ Time is what keeps everything from happening all at once. |

Excellent. Thanks everyone. I have what I need now.
Having made the decision to switch from the popular distros (fedora, opensuse, mint, debian) to gentoo, I sense I'll be pestering the boards as I attempt to get my Sony Vaio notebook setup. It's been a few years since I used gentoo so I'm a bit rusty. |

XEmacs is another Emacs variant and has nothing to do with X or what else. The original fork has been called Lucid Emacs and later changed to XEmacs because of *better* support of X. app-editors/emacs is the GNU Emacs under the supervision of the FSF. The USE flag dependencies for the widget sets (Gtk+, Athena etc.) only are used when USE=X is present to prevent unwanted dependencies (like disabling all widget USE flags separately). |
