Hello,
I wondered if UT was available for free (and legally so). Does anyone know if and where it can be downloaded?

UT99 is not free. You will need to purchase a copy to legally have it.

I thought they'd released it as freeware a few years back, but apparently this is not the case :(

Thanks for the reply.
I guess I'll have to invest some money, then.
The Wikipedia says Linux was supported and there are ebuilds for the UTs, but on Amazon I could only find Win CDs/ DVDs. Will they work with the ebuilds or is there really a Linux version somewhere out there?

In the meantime, are there any similar OSS games around?

The Windows version will work with the ebuilds.

For OSS games that are similar I would recommend trying out: Nexuiz, Warsow, Sauerbraten (also known as Cube 2... this is a graphically superior redesign of another OSS game called Cube.) Considering the interestes you have expressed I would try those in order and you can get them all from portage.

Also, for some amazing native games that are not OSS but are free check out Savage XR (An excellent fan update to the original commercial game Savage which has been released as a free download) and Savage 2 (the sequel to Savage that is still commercially supported but has moved to a model of being free while charging for optional special items.)

Thank you for pointing out some other games.

I have expressed interests? Well, yes, of course similar to Unreal Tournament somehow is expressing an interest.
I wanted it to be a FPS with Death Match, rather futuristic than modern War/ WW.
Now emerging Nexuiz.

Then I think you will be very satisfied with all 3 of the OSS games I suggested. They each stand on their own as good futuristic shooters and they each have elements that make them unique. Nexuiz will have the kind of pace you would appreciate in UT. Cube also has that fast pace. Warsow is more intentional with walljumping and trick jumping and it also stands out with its beautiful cell-shaded graphics. I hope you enjoy them.

I'm used to Quake 1 / Quakeworld, and out of the 3 that were named I prefer Warsow... it's the fastest FPS I ever played.

Another good free multiplayer FPS is Alien Arena, which is a lot like Quake 3. emerge alienarena.

None of these are like UT though.

UT99, UT2k4, and Unreal 1 and 2 are available at Gog.com for $10 each if you're interested in buying them.
You'll need wine to run the Gog installer though, but once you do that you can use the installed files to setup a native Linux client.

you can use the ebuild too, just set CD_ROOT to the folder the GOG installer installed to, and manually create the "Logs" directory, it'll install as if it was the cd.
