hi there,

I own a gericom webgine 1ghz notebook. it comes with various sis chipsets.
I already know the site www.winischhofer.net, and read it.

but I need a guide, that tells me what to do step by step.
what kernel config, what patches etc..

I want to make as much work as possible. (irda, x, drm, dvd/cdrw...)

but I can not seem to find a start.

help is much appreciated!

thx+regards
/christian

whoa there. itll be a fluke if someone can actually provide a written account of what you need to do to get all of this working, for your exact config.

Id suggest you break this down to lots of little tasks, instead of the one massive task. something like the following: (becides once 2 has been done, someone else has bound to have detailed what you need to on the forum, for 3 onwards and and problems youll encounter :D

1) find out your exact hardware spec.
2) install gentoo, sticking heavily to the install guide & making full use of genkernel.
3) install xfreedrm (although on a laptop is there any benefit?!?),
4) tweak kernel to get IRDA working.
5) tweak kernel further to get CDRW working etc.

if you stick to the manuals install instructions, & use genkernel, this will create your kernel, to be near enough the same as the one it uses after it detects your hardware on install. It may not pickup the IRDA, & wont pickup the writer part of your cd properly, but it should choose the correct chipsets like the IDE, USB, and other onboard stuff. the autodetection stuff is pretty clever, and very extensive too.

You will eventually have to tweak that kernel, most hardware configuration issues eventually lead here, especially if genkernel doesnt configure something.
