PostPosted: Thu Feb 04, 2010 7:12 pm    Post subject: New install fails to boot. **SOLVED** Reply with quote

Hello, everyone, I know I have become a pest on these boards with all of my install woes, but I have one more problem with my configuration. I have made and remade the kernel by viewing the various posts here from those having the same troubles as I have had. I know for sure that there is something not configured correctly in my kernel, or possibly my fstab. the error that I'm receiving is as follows:
Code:
The superblock could not be read or does not describe a correct ext2 filesystem. If the device is valid and it really contains an ext2 filesystem (and not swap or ufs or something else), then the superblock is currupt, and you might try running e2fsck with an alternate superblock:
e2fsck -b 8193 <device>
*Filesystem couldn't be fixed :(

This is my motherboard: GIGABYTE GA-770TA-UD3 AM3 AMD 770 SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.0 ATX AMD Motherboard http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813128419

My fstab:
Code:
# <partition>   <mountpoint>      <type>   <opts>         <dump/pass>

/dev/sdb1   /boot        ext2    defaults,noatime     1 2
/dev/sdb2   none         swap    sw                   0 0
/dev/sdb3   /            ext3    noatime              0 1
/dev/sr1    /mnt/cdrom   auto    noauto,user          0 0
/dev/sda1   /mnt/windows ntfs-3g  defaults,rw,user,umask=0 0 0

my grub.conf:
Code:
default 0
timeout 30
splashimage=(hd1,0)/boot/grub/splash.xpm.gz

title Gentoo Linux 2.6.31-r6
root (hd1,0)
kernel /boot/kernel-2.6.31-gentoo-r6 root=/dev/sda3
#initrd /boot/initramfs-genkernel-x86-2.6.24-gentoo-r5

# vim:ft=conf:
title Windows 7 Ultimate
rootnoverify (hd0,0)
makeactive
chainloader +1

And my .config file is in the post below.

I have built my kernel several times, always with the same result upon booting, I know there has to be a simple setting or two that I need to tweak, I'm just having some trouble finding them.

I would appreciate any and all help I can get on this, I'm running an AMD Phenom quad core CPU (if it matters)

All of my drives are SATA, even the dvd drives.

Thanks

Todd

Just to be sure you didn't simply copy-pasted something wrong ;-)

In the kernel command line your are using sda3 as root and in fstab you are using sdb3. Which one is the correct one?

i have a little older gigabyte board. i see you chose same ethernet- r8169.
i have sata ahci enabled. i do not know what your sound card is.
here is my .config for zen-sources.
http://paste.pocoo.org/show/174015/

i remove intel cpu stuff. have ext4 fs enabled and kvm, squashfs , aufs ,tmpfs, and CDROM_PKTCDVD

being zen i do not know if you can just plug in my .config. you could emerge zen-sources and if your sound device is same this will work great.

and fix your grub.conf / fstab.

edit basically {one of my old bosses hated that word: basically} this is a pappy's kernel seed with what i want added.

Well, sda is my windows drive, and sdb is my Gentoo drive. I didn't know if in fstab I should call them all sda, or just the windows drive. They are actually 2 separate 1TB drives.

Yes, I thought so. But you said the kernel to use sda3 as the root-device (in your grub.conf - the appended root=/dev/sda3 parameter). Of course Linux can't find any useable device, if this is your windows drive. /etc/fstab does NOT mount your / device since it is located on the same. This is the "job" of the root parameter.

ok, and I now understand what you're saying, one question I do have is: If I change the parameters in fstab to "sda" for my gentoo drive, then what will that do to my windows drive, should it also be sda1?

Thanks

If you want grub to find your kernel and your /, you need to change your grub.conf (and not your fstab).

Well, the problem I had with that is: grub couldn't find my kernel if I had it set to sdb3. It would fail miserably, now I'm actually in my kernel using the "sda" parameters in fstab as well as grub. but with the "sdb" parameters, it simply would not boot the kernel. another problem I seem to be having is: now it doesn't seem to want to bring up net.eth0. I have to run that down, I'm sure it's in the kernel.

Thanks

two drives are two different drives.
you do not get to call them what you like.
sda, sdb, etc are determined by what slot they are plugged into on motherboard.
you have to find out what they are named and edit your files accordingly.

I totally understand that. When i booted the livedvd, I installed gentoo on /dev/sdb (1, 2, and 3) Windows is still intact on sda. However, when I configured grub, maybe I messed up. Is it possible that in grub.conf I should have entered hd0,0 for both and then made the determination of sda or sdb according to what was on each disk? (Windows on sda, gentoo on sdb?) I understand that this is totally confusing, if need be I can try to clear my question up a bit.

I really appreciate all the input I'm getting here, I am learning as we go along.

Thanks

Todd

To me it looks like the fstab way up at the top is fine.
If you installed grub on (hd1), then the grub.conf should have root (hd1,0) and root=/dev/sdb3

But it fails, so maybe you installed grub on (hd0) :?:
You can always reinstall grub on hd1
Code:
 ~ # grub
grub> find /grub/stage1
  (hd1,0)

grub> root (hd1,0)
Filesystem type is ext2fs, partition type 0xfd

grub> setup (hd1)
  ..... succeeded
Done.

grub> quit
 ~ #

... or edit grub.conf to root (hd0,0)

If you installed grub on (hd1), then the grub.conf should have root (hd1,0) and root=/dev/sdb3

But it fails, so maybe you installed grub on (hd0) :?:
You can always reinstall grub on hd1
Code:
 ~ # grub
grub> find /grub/stage1
  (hd1,0)

grub> root (hd1,0)
Filesystem type is ext2fs, partition type 0xfd

grub> setup (hd1)
  ..... succeeded
Done.

grub> quit
 ~ #

... or edit grub.conf to root (hd0,0)

Ok, I set it up like that, and for some reason it refuses to boot into the kernel. I'm getting really confused here, because when I set up and mounted the partitions for gentoo, it is sdb (1, 2, and 3) When I use the configuration that we have both determined to be fine, the kernel panics, caps lock and scroll lock lights on the keyboard flash, and it just stops dead. When I set up the fstab and grub.conf to see my /root as sda instead of sdb, it boots the kernel just fine (except for the eth0 refusing to start), but the Windows drive simply isn't mountable. This is getting really strange, because it boots windows just fine.

Thanks

Todd

**edit**

I just checked in CMOS, and have discovered that my gentoo drive is channel 3 master, would this affect the install and my current issue?

Thanks

Todd

boot cd/dvd, mount gentoo partitions,
Code:
nano /mnt/gentoo/etc/fstab

put hashmarks, # ,in front of every line in /mnt/gentoo/etc/fstab
Code:
nano /mnt/gentoo/etc/fstab

put hashmark, # ,in front of root=/dev leaving only /boot/kernel-2.6.31-gentoo-r6 for that line
reboot
if this works, the kernel will have found a root on its own and mounted it.
run fdisk -l to find out what device the kernel sees the root on
match the grub.conf and fstab to suit

you could disconnect your windows drive, edit files to use sda, just to get your gentoo running and find out what is working / not working.

linux sea chapter 7 for kernel error codes.
http://swift.siphos.be/linux_sea/ch07.html#id3002568

to me it is simpler to have linux on sda. i can edit grub.conf to boot windows or i can select my sdb / windows drive at bios, f12 select boot device. windows does not seem to be particular where it is plugged in to boot.

sometimes the boot order in your bios can effect how grub sees things. Try making it so the your 1tb with linux is the first in the boot order (or heck vice versa if it doesn't work).

Also if you haven't solved the problem yet maybe posting

fdisk -l

will help us.

Also, you could look into UUID naming in fstab so you don't have problems with device names/locations changing. A simple google of UUID and fstab will give you all you need for this.

Okay, have tried that and the kernel is panicking, num lock and scroll lock lights blink on keyboard, and had to restart. Grub worked properly, however.

Excellent idea! However, it came up with a kernel panic, scroll and numlock lights on keyboard blinking, etc. Fiddlesticks! :)

Ok, all of this I have tried, and am not even able to get close to being in the kernel, it's still panicking. the result of fdisk -l is as follows:
Code:
# fdisk -l

Disk /dev/sda: 1000.2 GB, 1000204886016 bytes
255 heads, 63 sectors/track, 121601 cylinders
Units = cylinders of 16065 * 512 = 8225280 bytes
Disk identifier: 0xd80ff29d

Device Boot      Start         End      Blocks   Id  System
/dev/sda1   *           1          14      112423+  83  Linux
/dev/sda2              15         142     1028160   82  Linux swap / Solaris
/dev/sda3             143      121601   975619417+  83  Linux

Disk /dev/sdb: 1000.2 GB, 1000204886016 bytes
255 heads, 63 sectors/track, 121601 cylinders
Units = cylinders of 16065 * 512 = 8225280 bytes
Disk identifier: 0xa08b42f3

Device Boot      Start         End      Blocks   Id  System
/dev/sdb1   *           1          13      102400    7  HPFS/NTFS
Partition 1 does not end on cylinder boundary.
/dev/sdb2              13      121602   976657408    7  HPFS/NTFS

Note that I have swapped the drives positioning on the MB, and the Linux drive is now sda, ntfs is now sdb.

I really appreciate all the help I'm getting here, as I have stated in other posts, I've used Gentoo for about 6 years, but the problem I have is:I only had to install it once, it was so stable that I haven't gone through this process much at all!

Thanks

Todd

you need drivers for your hard drive controllers:

edit menuconfig, recompile, resave kernel
Suggest you restore hard drives, grub.conf, and /etc/fstab to the original configuration unless you already restored ability to boot windows.

boot cd, run lspci-k, (not -kvm; too much info) note drivers in use and if others are missing in your menuconfig add them

well to me the output of the fdisk -l command shows that your linux drive is sdax ... so that would be hd0,X for grub not hd1,X.

It's always tough in forums to guess what you have tried in between posts but if you haven't tried setting your fstab to reflect sdax for your linux disk and also grub to use hd0,x for boot then try that. Also, at one point you said you had booted into your system but that your internet wasn't working. So I'm a little confused whether you have had a successful boot into your login and console yet.

@ bobspencer
he has a grub which is loading a kernel
therefore grub is not a player in this problem.
he has now revealed an ati chipset in his lspci -kvm
he earlier showed no drivers for the hard drive controllers on that chipset in his posted config

After extensive searching I have found my main error. I installed grub on hd1. It should have gone on hd0. Is there a way to correct this mistake, or should I boot the Windows cd and reinstall the MBR?

My linux drives have now changed. I reverted to my original configuration.
Code:
# fdisk -l

Disk /dev/sda: 1000.2 GB, 1000204886016 bytes
255 heads, 63 sectors/track, 121601 cylinders
Units = cylinders of 16065 * 512 = 8225280 bytes
Disk identifier: 0xa08b42f3

Device Boot      Start         End      Blocks   Id  System
/dev/sda1   *           1          13      102400    7  HPFS/NTFS
Partition 1 does not end on cylinder boundary.
/dev/sda2              13      121602   976657408    7  HPFS/NTFS

Disk /dev/sdb: 1000.2 GB, 1000204886016 bytes
255 heads, 63 sectors/track, 121601 cylinders
Units = cylinders of 16065 * 512 = 8225280 bytes
Disk identifier: 0xd80ff29d

Device Boot      Start         End      Blocks   Id  System
/dev/sdb1   *           1          14      112423+  83  Linux
/dev/sdb2              15         142     1028160   82  Linux swap / Solaris
/dev/sdb3             143      121601   975619417+  83  Linux

What you're saying about grub makes total sense, it should be in hd0. In hd0, the windows drive would be sdax, and the linux drives would be sdbx. The only way I can boot into my console is to change grub.conf to boot sda3 instead of sdb3, due to the fact that like an idiot, I chose hd1 for stage1, not hd0. And yes, once it boots into the shell, eth0 will not come up.

I hope this clears things up a bit, and I hope I am correct with my assumptions. I appreciate all the help!!

Thanks!
