I have the following error in /var/log/messages:

I suspect it might be the reason my sound isn't working even though the rest seems fine?

That looks like an unrelated error to me, related to KDE plasma rather than a sound server.
Have you previously had sound working on this machine, but it broke on an upgrade? |
