|

I asked this a while back in another tread with no luck.
On my Redhat/Fedora system I edit /etc/inittab and set the run level to 3.
I tried this with my current set up with no luck.
Any ideas.

Did you remove xdm from the default runlevel? Code: | eselect rc delete xdm default |
Now at boot, you get a console login shell. |

Yes. startx will start X by first invoking xinit. By itself, this would put you at a blank, bare-bones desktop with no Window Manager loaded. If no client program is specified on the command line, xinit will look for a .xinitrc file in the user's home directory, to run as a shell script. If found, this then would in turn run whatever user specified commands to set up the environment, or launch programs that the file contained.
You can create/edit a ~/.xinitrc file to start a preferred Window Manager/Desktop Environment. Eg. Code: | ~ $ cat .xinitrc
exec startkde | Others include exec gnome-session, exec fvwm, and so on...
Then when you run:it'll fire up your favorite Window Manager/Desktop Environment.

Thanks.
I got thing to work but I get a Gnome error:
First of all:
#more .xinitrc
exec gnome-session
Here is the error:
There was an error starting the GNOME Setting Daemon.
Somethings, such as themes, sound or background
settings may not work correctly.
The Setting Daemon restricted too many times.
GNOME will still try to restart the Setting Daemon next
time you log in.
I can live with this but it would be nice to know how to fix it. _________________ Without diversity there can be no evolution:) |

Try first creating a new temporary testuser account and start Gnome from there to see if this behavior is persistent.
If it still fails please post the actual error message verbatim, as well as the output of rc-status and your emerge --info |

You can use this :
Code: |
# emerge -av wgetpaste
# emerge --info | wgetpaste
# rc-update show | wgetpaste
# rc-status | wgetpaste

I tried this but java 1.6 and eagle electronics are masked.
I install my own java and tomcat.
I'm not sure why eagle is masked since I emerged this package a while back.
Thanks you. _________________ Without diversity there can be no evolution:) |
