Heres a tip.

Click the big back button on your browser.
Read the sticky message on top labeled "read me before posting"
Read rule number one:
"This is *not* a support forum. Do not ask questions here. The moderators and myself would like to stress this point, if you do ask a question, your post will be deleted. Use the other forums to ask questions, if you are asking a question regarding a tip or trick, you are encouraged to include a link to the tip/trick you are referring to make it easier for other to help you. Have you tried pre-linking? I haven't tried myself (I guess I don't crave speed enough :) ), but from what I read on these forums, it seems to make a noticable difference.

Jesus Anior, calm down, hes a n00b here (just like you) and he just asked a question.. just politely inform him this the wrong forum.

Roofy... just ideas and suggestions for fast linux:
~ Use a Window Manager like Fluxbox (any minimalist GUI)
~ Dont run unneeded system services (ex: don't run Apache if your not hosting a website)
~ Compile the kernel with only what you need, not everything that you can think of
~ As "Black" said... use prelinking, its helps to speed up your system quite a bit
~ Keep your hard drive clean (empty /usr/portage/packages/All once in a while, etc...)
~ Last but not least, just go and read some of the stuff in the documentation forum and it'll help you to speed things along

Good luck..

Nonono :) Rebooting is only needed after installing a new kernel, not as in Windows , after you install anything! :D

In order for prelinking to work, the programs that you want prelinked needs to be emerged with the 'prelink' USE flag else prelinking will not do you any good.

Errr... I can't find any mention of a prelink USE flag in ufed, make.conf, make.globals, or /usr/portage/profiles/use.desc*. I'll try it though. Do any libraries need to be rebuilt? Or just applications I want prelinked?

While searching for it, I did find a pic flag for glibc, so I guess I'll be rebuilding glibc soon. This is the first I'd noticed it. It wasn't mentioned in the prelink howto or turned on automatically by emerging prelink.

I was wondering why prelink didn't seem to change my system performance at all :)

To get my Gentoo running nicely I do the following:

Only the essentials all built into the kernel.
Fluxbox ;)
Firebird ;)
rxvt ;)
All services run on my other headless gentoo box.
2.6-test kernels make things alot snappier.
Some gtk engines are faster than others, pixmap/pixbuf are slower.
512Mb of RAM is farily essential.

I use a Duron 950 so I find anything like a P4 2Ghz or XP 1.5 is blisteringly fast and without much need for tweaking under linux.

Love-sources 2.6.0-test4-r5
prelinking
Agressive compile flags (doubtful this is give you much umfph)
Compile with branch prediction (not quite sure how to implement this in portage yet but it should add around a nifty 10% speed increase on some programs)
NPTL
X renicing can help in some cases.
portage nicing will help interactivity under emerging (add PORTAGE_NICENESS=10 to make.conf) .

Better hardware is always good --- give me some :)

There are 2 kinds of fast - user fast and benchmark fast... I tend to favor the first one as a meassurement.

Firebird is a much speedier browser... once you try it, you'll never want to go back to mozilla :)

Tabs are so wonderful :D

Firebird will become the Mozilla suite browser at some point so I guess not much - I personally use Epiphany which is based on Mozilla 1.4(or 1.5).

You could look at Atlantis for GNOME it's a 50k browser - it's sadly only available in a precompiled format right now, I've done some probing with the author to release it as open source so we could at least look at what it does and how it works.

Atlantis uses gtkhml and does not depend on mozilla or another browser. It's fairly speedy.

another thing that really speeded up my system was the use of software raid. so if you have 2 hard disks, you should give it a try.
and of course make sure that your hard drives are properly configured.

on the point of kernel tuning you should make sure that the right modules for your chipsets are installed and i also advice to use PREEMPT.

PostPosted: Sun Oct 26, 2003 11:16 pm    Post subject: ext2/3 optimisation Reply with quote

I noticed an option in the e2fsck man page the other day:
Code:
-D     Optimize  directories  in filesystem.  This option causes e2fsck
to try to optimize all directories, either by reindexing them if
the  filesystem  supports directory indexing,  or by sorting and
compressing directories for smaller directories, or for filesys-
       tems using traditional linear directories.

I haven't used it personally, but if your using ext2/3 it may be worth trying

Up until today, I had tried everything- prelink, latest 2.6 mm-sources, hdparm, -02 -s USE settings, etc... No matter what, Gentoo just wouldn't perform as I knew it could. Then, I came across another post somewhere (sorry, don't remember where) about the following:

DON'T HAVE YOUR CDRW CONNECTED TO YOUR PRIMARY HARD DRIVE! USE THE OTHER IDE PORT (OR IDE CARD).

I read that post awhile back and should have switched IDE ports then for my CDRW, but didn't. Well, I did today and my system is going MUCH faster! Everything seems snappier, even when "emerging".

:D
