There is a thread on the KDE forums discussing the beset KDE4 distribution. I was surprised that not many people mentioned Gentoo Linux and that one of the comments about Gentoo was slightly negative (e.g. "there is no longer enough performance advantage to offset the massive time it takes to install stuff"), so I decided to make a chime into the thread and make a case for Gentoo Linux being the best KDE4 distribution:

http://forum.kde.org/viewtopic.php?f=63&t=6673&p=147035#p147035

Feel free to add your comments in the thread. There is nothing (aside from religious conversions) I would love more than to convert the users of other distributions to Gentoo Linux. :)

Sure, I'll jump in.

- Nepomuk and Akonadi are still useless crap that cause more problems than they solve. Gentoo lets me get by without them.
- Installing third-party plasmoids is nearly effortless though the package manager (being managed though the package manager is the big advantage)

Not any more.

Are you sure?

Code:
richard@new-host-3 ~ $ emerge -p kde-base/nepomuk kde-base/akonadi

These are the packages that would be merged, in order:

Calculating dependencies... done!
[ebuild  N    ] kde-base/libkdepim-4.4.0  USE="(-aqua) -debug (-kdeenablefinal) (-kdeprefix)"
[ebuild  N    ] kde-base/kdepim-icons-4.4.0  USE="(-aqua) (-kdeenablefinal) (-kdeprefix)"
[ebuild  N    ] kde-base/nepomuk-4.4.0  USE="handbook (-aqua) -debug (-kdeenablefinal) (-kdeprefix)"
[ebuild  N    ] kde-base/kdepim-runtime-4.4.0  USE="(-aqua) -debug (-kdeenablefinal) (-kdeprefix)"
[ebuild  N    ] kde-base/akonadi-4.4.0  USE="(-aqua) -debug (-kdeenablefinal) (-kdeprefix)"

I have kde-base/kdebase-meta installed, which does not require the installation of unnecessary software with KDE, like what xorg-server does for xorg-x11.

If you must have PIM, then yes, you're out of luck. But it's the only thing that forcibly requires them.

Yes, I am using kmail. And it forced me to unmask -semantic-desktop and -akonadi.

Have you considered Thunderbird? I understand that it is a good alternative. Another possibility is to try the Google approach to things and switch to Gmail so you do not need an email client anymore.

Yes. I used to use thunderbird. Then I got fed up with the mail management in thunderbird. It was also quite keyboard unfriendly.

There are also many bugs in kontact. Currently, that is what I am using though and find it more keyboard friendly, more configurable to my tastes and additionally has decent integration between mail, calendar and tasks.

I do not exactly understand what you are trying to "sell" in this thread:
Gentoo to KDE4 users or third party thingies to Gentoo users in order to overcome KDE4's defects... ?
In the second case, you'll need to prepare your arguments for a Gentoo && KDE4 && (compiz && thunderbird && eclipse && firefox && OOo &&...) system... :D
And at the end of the day, incidentally wonder... KDE4... What4 !

I added my 2 cents to the KDE discussion on the kde forum.

I just thought Gentoo deserved more attention in a thread regarding which distribution is best suited for KDE4, however, it seems I killed the discussion, because binary distributions usually do not provide preemptible kernels and it is difficult for users of binary distributions to argue against the need for a preemptible kernel in a distribution that is well suited for KDE4. It would be hilarious if they tried.
