Xircom Eth+Modem (rem56G-10) on Presario 1200 Series

<disclaimer> First off, I apologize for what may be a completely moronic / incoherant post, as I'm far from linux guru. </disclaimer>

Well, I've been searching for about half an hour now and I decided it was time to post, lol. Anyway, I've got a Compaq Presario 1200 with a Xircom REM56G-10 PCMCIA Ethernet Adapter that does not want to be recognized by gentoo. I've seen a few threads which show some modprobe commands to use that will supposedly get it working, but I haven't been able to. One of the commands is:

#modprobe i82365

What exactly does this do? Is this a generic thing or is it for a specific chipset? In which case, how do I know what command I should be using?
