I just bought a laptop and proceeded to setup Linux on it. I want to make it so both it and my other computer are connected to the internet at the same time. I have a small hub and am using ADSL. Both my desptop can be connected to the internet through the hub while alone, but both of them cannot be connected at the same time. If one is connected, and I boot up the other one, it will time out on DHCP and not set up eth0.
Is there anything I can do to get them both working at the same time? _________________ GO ASASHORYU!

You need to either buy a broadband router or setup an old computer up with linux to act as a router for you.

OK, wouldn't it be possible to use the desptop as the router? Is there a quick and easy way to do that?
I must be sounding like a real newbie. _________________ GO ASASHORYU!

if you do want to set up the desktop as a router:
get two NICs in there (or whatever the ADSL line connects to + NIC). connect adsl to desktop and desktop to hub, then the laptop to the hub (or laptop direct to desktop via a crossover cable). Set up IP masquerading (google for it) on the desktop, look at shorewall for help
one problem with this it that the desktop machine has to be booted into linux for the laptop to have internet access. I also recommend a static ip config if its just the desktop and laptop _________________ 95% of all computer errors occur between chair and keyboard (TM)

You don't actually need 2 NICS. My guess is that your ADSL "modem" has a 4-port hub on it or something similar. You can plug both machines into it, and then add a virtual interface (eth0:1) to the machine that you pick to be the router.
Both eth0 and eth0:1 share the same physical NIC card, but they can have different IP's and subnet masks. I've used a setup like that to provide NAT access for several other machines. |

his modem doesn't necessarily have 4 ports on it. just depends on his modem. i would recommend the two NIC card approach not hard to setup and very cheap $5 bucks on pricewatch.com

why does the desktop have to be booted to linux? aren't there windows router products? _________________ There are only 10 types of people in the world. Those who understand binary and those who don't. |

Since you will be routing the traffic through your desktop it will need to be on...
Under the impression that the desktop is running linux |

OK OK, the computer has to dual boot with ...ick...win (gf uses the comp too). So once I a broadband router, how do I get it so that both computers can use the internet at the same time?
Can I just plug it in and it will work? _________________ GO ASASHORYU!
