According to the ntfs-3g project pages, ntfs-3g since 2009.11.14 has support for ownership and permissions.

I emerge ntfs-3g with following use flags:
sys-fs/ntfs3g-2009.11.14 USE="external-fuse hal -acl -debug -suid"

I have created a .NTFS-3G/UserMapping file with contents

Quote:
:users:S-1-5-21-943818495-2179029594-2586233797-513
jan:jan:S-1-5-21-943818495-2179029594-2586233797-1001
ann:ann:S-1-5-21-943818495-2179029594-2586233797-1005
anke:anke:S-1-5-21-943818495-2179029594-2586233797-1003
jens:jens:S-1-5-21-943818495-2179029594-2586233797-1004

after this, I unmounted and remounted the drive the drive
mount -t ntfs-3g -o noatime /dev/sdb5 /mnt/data

but in spite of this, I only see all users owned by root with permissions 777.
Also chowning a file does not work. Is there something I may have forgotten

from the debug output, I don't see anyindication that it even tries to read .NTFS-3G/UserMapping, but the line that appears in /var/log/messages/current makes me think it somehow sees something invalid in the UserMapping file. I just don't see what

this time, I got

and cat /mnt/data showed files belonging to e.g. jan:users
If I am carefull, I can probably continue a bit experimenting with the groups until I find fully sensible defaults, that closely match the 'intent' of some of the GUID on the windows side.

I found the cause of the error I had.
Apparently, .NTFS-3G/UserMapping does not allow any whitespace lines. So only comment lines and mapping lines are allowed
