Will this cam work?
http://cgi.ebay.com/New-20-0-Mega-Pixel-20-0M-6-LED-USB-PC-Webcam-Mic-/170423814935?pt=PCA_Video_Conferencing_Webcams&hash=item27ae0d0b17

I don't need it to be really high quality or anything like that. It's going in a small room, and will take pictures as a security cam. Or maybe some video when motion is detected.

Well thats the thing. I don't expect it to be 20 megapixels. it could be 1 megapixel for all I care. I'm more concerned with if there are drivers for it.

d4mo,

We won't know until you plug it in and report the vendor and device IDs from lsusb.
MJPEG video is a bad sign. There are few Linux apps that handle that yet.

This one:

http://cgi.ebay.com/USB-Mini-Egg-HD-Webcam-Video-Camera-PC-Linux-/220698591816?pt=PCA_Video_Conferencing_Webcams&hash=item3362a94248

and this one:

Both claim the are supported by linux, but I guess that doesn't mean much. They don't give alot of info.

d4mo,

Those ads are more honest 640x480 resolution, which is plenty for a webcam.
The ads say Linux compatible ... but you still won't know until you get the Vendor and Device ID.

What about Logitec?
Most but not all of their cams work in linux
