Thunderbird 3 doesn't beep any more?

I upgraded from mozilla-thunderbird-2.0.0.23 to mozilla-thunderbird-bin-3.0.3 and found that I no longer get a system beep when new mail arrives.

I have "Play a sound" checked with "Default system sound for new mail" selected, but that doesn't help.

It is not obvious whether this is a bug or a feature. Is Thunderbird 3 able to system beep when new mail arrives? I don't have speakers on my PC, so I rely on the beep.

Thunderbid might have changed the way it uses the system beep (from the old pcspkr to snd-pcspkr). Open up alsamixer look for it, make sure it is unmuted (which it is by default).

I tried alsamixer, unmuting everything that could be unmuted, but that didn't help.

However, I found that Thunderbird 3 does system beep if I search an email message for non-existent text (i.e. provoking "Phrase not found").

So Thunderbird 3 is capable of beeping, just not when email arrives. Is this a bug or a feature? I found nothing obvious in the Thunderbird 3.0/3.01/3.02/3.03 release notes, so perhaps it is a bug.
