Folks,
I am a relatively new user of Linux (bar a stint way back when...).
I have managed to install Gentoo without any problems on a Dual P2-350 machine, having had to disable APM (no hardship)...
One Aim for Linux was as a small server-type machine for storing game patches and other such downloads. To this end, I have installed Samba, and successfully connected to my XP Machine. The problem comes here, as I can transfer a few small files without any problems, but as soon as I transfer a large number of small files/a large file the machine stops dead - to the extent of neding a reboot.
The Machine configuration is as follows:
Gigabyte BXDS Mobo
2x P2-350
256Mb ram
Onboard AHA-2940UW SCSI Card witha 2gig (boot/root) disk
29160 SCSI card with 5 x 9.1gb drives for data (was goign to be s/w raid, but the devfs would not create the /dev/md* interfaces - no loss)
3com 3c509 LAN Card
ATI Rage 128 Gfx
The machine will quite happily sit there all night re-compiling things, but as soon as I try and transfer a large file, it just locks up.
I have browsed the net, but all I have found is vague notes that samba "doesn't like" 3com cards....
The shares work fine, until Linux hangs during a large file transfer...
At the moment the machine is running on a V1.4RC4 installation with kernel version 2.4.40-r5 and Samba version 2.2.8a
Any help would be very gratefully received!
