Tray icons missing. Tray plasmoid affects stand-alone tray.

Most tray icons don't show up when running either trayer, stalonetray, or peksystray until adding then removing the plasma system tray plasmoid. I'm starting kde with kdm which runs xmonad via setting KDEWM in the environment. Nobody in the kde forums (here) could duplicate this so I assume it is gentoo specific.

I also thought of trying to run it before plasma starts but I can't figure out how. Gentoo doesn't seem to execute a user .xsession or .xinitrc and I can't figure out how to modify KDM to run a script before starting kde.
