I don't know if it is relevant, but in the off chance that it is i'd like to point out that i installed gentoo and did an emerge gnome, after which deciding i would like to use gnome-light, as such i did emerge -C gnome, and then emerge gnome-light, i think there may be a lot of orphaned packages from gnome on the system now, but im not sure if that is in anyway related or how to safely remove them.

Clicking on Applications does nothing. I have tried to unmerge and merge again the gnome-panels (version 2.28.0), but that hasn't helped in any way. Is this something that can be fixed easily? At the moment i have had to make a shortcut to a terminal and do everything via that :/

you can try

ln -s /etc/xdg/menus/gnome-applications.menu /etc/xdg/menus/applications.menu

or set:
export XDG_MENU_PREFIX=gnome-
into ~/.xinitrc or other config files that I don't remember.

see this for more info:

viralex, you have magical powers :) can you perhaps tell me what caused the corruption in the first place?

I don't know :P
it is only a prefix on file name.
they probably have changed something between versions or ebuilds configurations...

I had this problem 2 times, when I was with 2.28(I think) and with 2.30(a week ago).

Now I store my little "fix reports and solutions" into text files, if the problem come back I can fix it quickly!
