hi,
i just finished installing a gentoo 1.4 system on my ( old ! ) compaq Armada
1500C...
after a compilation time of about 24 hrs, i finally managed to have kde-base emerged...
problem is:
the redrawing of windows ( konsole, konqueror, etc. ) is soooo slow.
redraw is not smooth, as it should be - you can watch every window, as it gets drawed, line by line if you move the window...
i had an LFS system on this laptop before, kde 3.1.1 i guess...
kde speed was really ok, so there's no problem with cpu-speed, the laptop per se or something like that...
maybe someone's got the clue for this problem?
kde is really not usable for me.
program versions:
xfree86 4.3.0, precompiled
kde 3.1.2
( basically all versions from the current portage tree)
ah, btw.:
i first thought, thats a problem with my ( vanilla ) kernel; i changed default configuration drastically, disabled many, many modules, not needed stuff...
after discovering my problems with kde, i thought, well let's try gentoo standard kernel.
i emerged gentoo-sources, compiled via genkernel ( default-config ! )
and rebooted.
effect:
system hangs after entering initrd with something like:
oops, attempted to kill init...
am i doing something wrong here???
so my current situation is:
- system hangs when booting the gentoo kernel
- kde is very, very slow....
greets

Regarding your display performance problem - it would help to at least know what graphics card/chipset you are using and some information about your configuration (not least /etc/X11/XF86Config). What driver are you using? What colour depth? Consider running: Code: | XFree86 --configure |
as root. That will probe your devices and attempt to generate a skeletal (but suitable) XF86Config as /root/XF86Config.new. You will probably want to add a DefaultDepth 16 directive to the Section "Screen" section.
Also, when you build your kernel, be sure to compile in MTRR support. That can make a very big difference as X may be able to enable write-combining for video memory regions.
Gentoo-sources is a pretty reliable and trusty branch. There are many reasons why it might not be working. I don't use the likes of genkernel so I do not know the options it tends to use, but I do know that it requires initrd, which otherwise wouldn't really be necessary for many users. If you do not feel confident building a custom kernel then consider getting hold of a .config from someone experienced with building kernels then making the few alterations to support your hardware. Then build the kernel in the traditional way. If it turns out that genkernel doesn't build a working kernel, yet gentoo-sources works on your system then I'm sure it would be a good idea to file a bug |

hi,
thanks a lot for your answer...
well, first of all, i'm not a newbie ( new to gentoo, sure ) but i am working
with linux / un*ces for about 10 years now...
i am also a little bit involved in mplayer development ( just a little bit )
ok, the graphics chip is a ct69000 / (chips and technologies)
driver is: suprise, surprise: "chips"
i just copied my ( working !! ) XF86Config from my LFS system running on
X 4.3.99.9 into my gentoo installation. plain X worked so far...
should be no general X problem here...
ok, MTRR are compiled in, just to make it sure;
i know about the performace boost... ( MPlayer )
and the kernel problem - puh, i'll have to see ;-(
so my problem with kde performance still persists...
greets

hi again,
ok, system hangs when probing usb-mass-storage with gentoo-sources.
live-cd boot process finishes without problems...
i will now emerge xfs-sources ( live-cd-kernel ?? ) and try again...
next problem ( xfree / kde performance )
will upgrade to xfree-4.3.99.11 and see if performance is still poor.
( as i said, my lfs system had 4.3.99.9 running with very good preformance )
and i believe, the chips driver is currently under development.
maybe the problem is fixed with a more recent version...
just in case, i have to file a bug:
where does a hardware dependend bug go in bugzilla ?
( thats limited to compaq armada 1500c / ct69000 graphics-chipset )
