I just noticed that a patch seems to have failed:
* Applying as-needed-2.2.6.patch ...
/var/tmp/portage/net-libs/gnutls-2.8.6/temp/environment: line 2842: pushd: lib: No such file or directory

Could that have something to do with it? If so, what can I do?

It's a known issue. See: https://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic-t-823484.html

It is like Mike Hunt says known issue, an other topic for this (but now it works normally) https://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic-p-6244419.html#6244419
