OK I got a nice static shunt now, but I have a feeling that old habits of swapping barebones HDs, 6 of them between two laptops, one IDE and one SATA, without making sure microelectronics conducted by squamous epithelia wouldn't induce the 33% incidence of strange behavior of HDs. One is dual booting FreeBSD 6.2 and a mangled Uncle Bill, if I am not mistaken, and the other fired up and magic smoke making scary noises that would surely menance any exceedingly mellow chihuahua but nonetheless managing to meet most expectations:

Both this HD and the FB6.2 make exceedingly macroscopic rattles, and additionally, this Gentoo2.6.32-r7 right now really seems to be pushing it's cooling mechanisms to the limit, with a nonstop purr giving my lap a massage right now.

Are you know comparing a HD with FreeBSD6.2? I think you are also asking two questions:
- One (or two?) of my HD's makes rattling noices, what to do?
- Upgrading the kernel made one of my laptops (the one with FreeBSD6.2) hot, what to do?
Am I right? |

they both rattle, I was getting worried about the wirr. The FB6.2 HW is old, I am not worried about doing anything about that. I guess one thing I would like to know is am I right, static electricity could have caused these rattles? Is there something else going on? This morning the new laptop, I have 3HDs, one with Microsoft, one with Ubuntu, and this one. I physically take them out to swap booting, instead of "dual boot." I have noted that other folk out there do this, there shouldn't be anything wrong with doing this, right? I have taken to avoiding excessive swapping of late. The Gentoo HD is now continuing to spin right now. I have noted that the clunks (different than the "wirr" or the "purr." Clunks sound distinctly like something bad is happening, but nothing seems to really come of it for the most part--the "wirr/purr" right now is scaring me because it is nonstop. It is a normal sound of a HD working, but why is it working all the time like this.. it reminds me of running a CD/DVD based OS like Knoppix or Freesbie (?))..
I have noted that Gentoo is noticing clunks during startup and hangs sometimes. I am worried about this mess. I am wondering about prudent options.. well.. obviously one is "get a new HD" I might do that, but I really hope there is something less drastic right now just because I need to spend time on using this computer and not building a new OS right now. _________________ Kayven Riese, BSCS,

The ratling sound could be the 'click of death' (ie your disk is dying).
Why everything is aligned to the left, I don't know. Thought it was a joke from you or something |

I have been running the clunky FreeBSD 6.2 for years, although I try not to.
What can I do about my never stopping Gentoo disk? _________________ Kayven Riese, BSCS,

Perhaps with hdparm you could:
- disable the disk
- enable suspend mode
- disable writebuffer
etc etc |
