Im about half way through compiling emerge -u gnome the latest gnome-current from BMG and it hit me that i still have rc1 installed, will it try to remove this at the end or should i unmerge while its merging? Im currently compiling while in x which hasnt been a problem with previous upgrades, but i know since they put rc1 in portage, that bmg had to rename all files to _p1 and was wondering what kinda affect this is gonna have on me.

Unless you have exported AUTOCLEAN="no" in your make.conf, then you should be able to download current, run an emerge -U gnome and have it replace your current installation of gnome. Unless you have the AUTOCLEAN="no" you should notice it removing packages after it installs a newer version of the package.
