*Very* slow KDE application startup

Under KDE, applications start up very slowly. After staring the app, often I must wait for 30-40 seconds before the application actually begins. Any thoughts as to why?

I'm running a laptop with NeoMagic video, XFree 4, KDE 3, all the most recent versions available through the portage tree.

Under COL I once had problems with apps starting slowly. For some reason, it was trying to resolve an address while launching. I don't remember the fix, but it seems I added the local machines ip address to the hosts file. Just a thought.
