/dev/dvd disappeared after reboot.

On a ~amd64 desktop I recently lost /dev/dvd, /dev/dvdrw and /dev/dvd1 and /dev/dvdrw1.

/dev/hdc and /dev/hdd are still there but have the group id of disk.

I am no longer able to burn disks are /dev/dvd does not exsist anymore and the group id for devices has changed from cdrom to disk.

Any suggestions about where to look to determine what is amiss.

I am currently running sys-fs/udev-151-r4 and sys-apps/hal-0.5.14-r2.

What devices are listed in /sys/block (except for loop and ram) ?

That means the suggested way is to migrate to pure libata setup
- simply check, if you have selected correct pata drivers,
deselect those from CONFIG_IDE and make sure to select proper
option for cdrom.

It's a change in udev - upstream made it awhile ago, Gentoo till lately had that reverted by default,
but the last revision made not reverted the default, to prepare for following the upstream.

I think I have a simlar problem -- when I list the devices in /sys/block, my "cdrom" is there as device hdc. The /dev directory has the correct liks:

0 lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 3 May 3 03:47 dvd1 -> hdc
0 lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 3 May 3 03:47 dvdrw1 -> hdc

I am in the correct groups for cdrom -- the application cdrecord will burn if I pass it the device, however none of the graphical apps in KDE or GNOME even see the drive. Trying to understand what is happening. Have not burned for quite a while.
