Hi all
i just installed my first gentoo linux, and am dealing with many many problems.
Anticipating it i downloaded me a copy of Gunnar Wrobels Gentoo Linux and bought Tobias Scherbaums Gentoo Linux: Die Metadistribution
Both in german, because the only english book is not only insanely overpriced but also pitifully small! 108 pages
Why is it thate there are no other/better books about Gentoo in english?
Why aren't there any useful books about Linux Kernel in german?
What book would help me to understand make menuconfig, since right no i am just gessing like 90% of the time if i need some module/driver or not. |

Written information gets old really really fast (and much more so for books). So when using Gentoo, which consists of pretty recent packages, is rolling release and changes every day, your documentation is out of data as soon as it's written.
Regarding German literature: Where English Literature is out of date, translations of it are ancient. Which is basically why computer science books - more often than not - aren't even translated and are used in English (even in German universities). That might or might not include the more theoretical ones which are a bit more prone to time. But I guess computer science relies pretty heavily on the English language. I for one can say that I picked up more vocabulary reading about HTML and Delphi at age 12 than I did in school. |

I'd also like to point out (okay, shameless self-promotion here that I've started with an online quizz-like approach so that people can use online self-teaching skills, in case they want. It's far from perfect (the tool) but has the advantage that it's nicely browser based with only client-side stuff. _________________ Please add "[solved]" to the initial topic title when it is solved. |
