I converted a video without sound to both H264 and Xvid using AVI as the container. The H264 is half the size of the Xvid, but uses twice the CPU!
The size should be smaller. No problem there. But twice the CPU consumption?! Is this right? I think I did something wrong.
The video codec options were the defaults in Avidemux. |

No, this is how it's supposed to be. Store less, compute more. If you'd compare H264 with mpeg-1 the difference is even larger. |

Xvid and h264 are both MPEG-4. |

So? One is MPEG-4 Part 2, the other is MPEG-4 Part 10 AVC. Apart from both being created by the same standards body and both being DCT based, they are quite different. h264 has a lot more features, which makes it more efficient, but also more resource intensive. |
