So I've been trying desperately to get Counter Strike working with Wine. I am however having problems with the game immedietaly shutting down when starting it (right after the "Preparing to launch" dialog). This is the last output from Wine, as far as I can see (which I doubt is unrelated).

Code:

I've tried the ancient workaround to disable the Steam in-game overlay. I've also tried it on Arch (same Wine version) where is works as it should.
I really can't think of anything else to do, so I'm asking you guys.

Thanks in advance. :)

Please post your configuration :
Code:

Have you tried with a clean fresh WINEPREFIX ?

app-emulation/wine-1.1.31 was built with the following:
USE="X alsa gecko jpeg mp3 opengl perl png ssl threads -capi -cups -dbus -esd -fontconfig -gnutls -gphoto2 -gsm -hal -jack -lcms -ldap -nas -ncurses -openal -oss -samba -scanner -test -win64 -xcomposite -xinerama -xml"

Used to have a lot more of ricing cflags and whatnot, but I initially thought they borked wine - but was since then removed. World is now compiled with the above cflags.

Yes, and I have also tried running it as root in case it was a permissive issue. Going to try leaving it running for the day in case it somehow works itself out.

Find this quite weird really, no exception is raised in the terminal as far as I can see.

Thank you for your input.

That's not the real issue at hand as far as I know, unfortunately.

On a related note it is working for me - still have no idea what I did to make it work. The last thing I remember I was doing was to recompile wine with very sane cflags.

CFLAGS="-march=native -O2 -pipe -fomit-frame-pointer"
CXXFLAGS="${CFLAGS}"

I had real trouble with Half-Life and the "err:ntdll:RtlpWaitForCriticalSection" error but I think there are many possible causes. I tried many things but it was eventually switching away from fglrx that cured it for me. Not surprising really.

I was going to mention that but I don't know if the old games (like the original CS) are going to be ported.

I am not sure if this is the same issue, but the new version of steam don't run actual with cedega too. Crossover Games had a new Version and there its fixed now. I don't know how this is with wine, maybe take a look on wine.org or wait a while for a wine update.

Regards

Chris

Edit: Oh sorry, this first post of the thread is too old (Nov. 2009) to be the steam issue. Ok, don't take care of my post. The Update Issue with steam was in the End of 2010-04-X.

One day, I was just casually walking down a quiet road when a car drove past and someone unexpectedly shouted out of the window "Counter Strike's better!!" It took me a few seconds to work out what he actually said and then I suddenly remembered I was wearing the Half-Life t-shirt that came with the Generations pack. :lol:
