I think that what really matters is the stage tarball, and not the installation .iso. You can successfully install recent Gentoo with a three-year-old CD.

If you're still concerned about this, feel free to file a bug for the release engineers.

By the way, auto-generated three-months old install CD is still quite leading-edge, isn't it?

Not exactly.

1. New installation ISO = new kernel = new drivers. If you got a cuting edge hardware (for example: a HDD controller) it *makes* a difference.

2. Weekly, than mothly autobuild releases were introduced to replace a quaterly or yearly releases with most up-to-date, imperfect but frequent ones... It those are quite rare maybe it's time to return to the idea of 2010.1, .2, .3 and .4 cycle.

But there's a billion other x86-based distros out there you can use the liveCDs from to install Gentoo, not so much with alpha/sparc.

Can you even buy an x86 system anymore? I mean in terms of a desktop machine, not in terms of an embedded controller.

Edit: My point being, if nobody is selling new 32-bit intel hardware, then newer hardware isn't going to be on it either.

I've got an Asus laptop and desktop, both made in the last 2 years, both with 32-bit Atom CPUs. Pointlessly crippled IMO, but Intel's still making them for some reason.

Pardon me for sounding critical.

About 6 months ago, I bought an Asus 64-bit laptop with a webcam and Windows 7 on it for $250, limit 2 per customer and while supplies last. I got the last one and had to fight for it. I was so giddy at the idea of a 64-bit laptop with a web cam that I didn't realize that I had actually purchased a Windows license for the first time in my 44 years on this planet.

Your 32 bit systems must have been virtually free.

On top of that, I found the thing so slow compared to my other hardware that I never used it more than once or twice. I "loaned" it to a friend of mine, but I doubt I'll ever see it again. To me, the hardware is so crappy and slow I didn't want to waste time putting Linux on it.

It takes all kinds to make the world go around. To me, Linux is what goes on the good hardware, not on the plain-jane stuff. Good luck and have fun.

I'd rather use the SysRescCD myself. More up-to-date kernel and filesystems.

Installing Gentoo from a three-year-old CD is going to cause him/her to go completely bald, not to mention a possible trip to the insane asylum.
