I had considered installing arch linux, but I found out that the install only sets up the main system (bare minimum). Tthere's not even a desktop, file manager, or any sound support. Surely Gentoo can do better? There should be basic defaults for some of these things, at least a desktop & file support. Also, since I want set up a dualboot system... if the install has partition options, then it should autodetect which partition has Windows (or another OS), so you can avoid overwriting it. The Arch Linux install has a partition manager, but it doesn't tell you what's in them, like another OS.
Also, Freedos has a desktop/filemager as default, but you can remove those if you want to use the command line exclusively, or if you want to install other versions. _________________ Q: 'What would you say to someone who asked, 'Can you keep a secret?'

If you want "user ready" Gentoo wouldn't be for you.
Sure it'll install anything you want but you'll have to do everything.
Like dual boot is how you create your bootloader.
It's not done automagically.
Binary distro's like *buntu etc. will do that though.

The same disk can be used for 32 and 64 bit installs.
You can follow the Handbook verbatim.

gentoo <= arch in the amount of thing that is done for you and gentoo > arch in the amount of thing you need to do after install.
between gentoo and arch on the easy side, select arch. else get debian or opensuse. _________________ Only two things are infinite, the universe and human stupidity and I'm not sure about the former - Albert Einstein |
