According to https://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic-t-409194.html, the first stage in getting wireless working on a Powermac G5 is to find your hardware. Well, in my case, lspci does not list any Broadcom or other wireless hardware. It's definitely there; the T-bar antenna is plugged in. But nothing relevant to wireless shows up on lspci. Does anyone know why this might be ? Can the wireless be disabled at bus level ?

As far as I know, in a G5, the answer is no. What kind of G5 is this again? That may help to figure out what's going on.

It's a dual 2.0 GHz Powermac. /proc/cpuinfo includes machine : PowerMac7.2.

I just booted from the minimal installation CD and that doesn't see any wireless hardware either. At least, iwconfig reports no wireless extensions on all of the interfaces.

It seems that I don't have wireless. I assumed that wireless was built-in to the Powermac because there is a plug with the T-shaped antenna plugged into a socket directly on the motherboard. According to the support page to which you linked, the airport extreme card is not standard but is an additional purchase. The only extra card in my machine is the graphics card. I don't understand why Apple supply an antenna but not the wireless card. I would have assumed that any antenna would have been plugged in to the airport extreme card. Presumably, the antenna must be connected to the card via the PCI bus. Anyway, the fact is that there is no wireless in this machine so sorry to take your time.
No MacOS on this machine as the DVD is blemished (blistered) and I can't repair it.

No worries!
As far as I know, the reason why there is an antenna is that it's built into the case so that if you do decide you want wireless, you can purchase the card and all the Apple techs have to do is plug in the card and the antenna. It's probably cheaper from a manpower perspective. :)

I don't see why that would be easier than supplying the antenna with the card, and plugging the antenna into a plug on the card.
But the fact is that they've thought about it more than I have and I'm sure there is a really good reason.
