Dear members,

i have a problem i dont know how to handle it. When i want to display a picture or open gimp i get the following error:
Code:

display bild0008.jpg
display: error while loading shared libraries: libjpeg.so.7: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory

i dont know which library to install.
i tried:
Code:

# emerge -av jpeg:7

 * Use eselect news to read news items.

These are the packages that would be merged, in order:

!!! All ebuilds that could satisfy "media-libs/jpeg:7" have been masked.
!!! One of the following masked packages is required to complete your request:
- media-libs/jpeg-7-r1 (masked by: ~x86 keyword)

For more information, see the MASKED PACKAGES section in the emerge
man page or refer to the Gentoo Handbook.

Or which libraries do i have to install?
Thanks a lot for any help!

You should run: revdep-rebuild it checks all dependancies and emerges the packages that have broken links.

 * revdep-rebuild failed to emerge all packages.
 * you have the following choices:
 * - If emerge failed during the build, fix the problems and re-run revdep-rebuild.
 * - Use /etc/portage/package.keywords to unmask a newer version of the package.
 *   (and remove 5_order.rr to be evaluated again)
 * - Modify the above emerge command and run it manually.
 * - Compile or unmerge unsatisfied packages manually,
 *   remove temporary files, and try again.
 *   (you can edit package/ebuild list first)
 *
 * To remove temporary files, please run:
 * rm /var/cache/revdep-rebuild/*.rr

The package "dev-java/sun-jdk" is licensed. To Accept teh license add it to /etc/portage/package.license like so:

echo "dev-java/sun-jdk dlj-1.1" >> /etc/portage/package.license
^ ^
package license name

Then try revdep-rebuild again

 * rm /var/cache/revdep-rebuild/*.rr

Allright, this is going the wrong way. Seems like there is a newer version of kde available, the problem is once you update one kde package the other kde packages need the same version. revdep-rebuild, in my experience, should only be run on a completely updated system. You can do two things:

1 quick fix
Emerge only the packages that don't work. Like gimp and so on to fix the dependancies of that package alone.

2 complete fix
First update your system "emerge --sync && emerge -auDN world" and than run "revdep-rebuild" to fix everything.

I would do the second but it could take some time....

Yep, that was to be expected, guess you have never seen something like this before.

Code:
('installed', '/', 'x11-libs/qt-qt3support-4.5.3', 'nomerge') pulled in by
    ~x11-libs/qt-qt3support-4.5.3[-debug] required by ('ebuild', '/', 'x11-libs/qt-gui-4.5.3-r2', 'merge')
    >=x11-libs/qt-qt3support-4.5.1:4[kde] required by ('ebuild', '/', 'kde-base/libknotificationitem-4.3.5', 'merge')
    >=x11-libs/qt-qt3support-4.5.1:4[kde] required by ('ebuild', '/', 'kde-base/kate-4.3.5', 'merge')
    (and 3 more)

For example, this piece of code tells you that:

x11-libs/qt-qt3support-4.5.3 is installed but another version of qt-qt3support is needed for kde-base/libknotificationitem-4.3.5 and kde-base/kate-4.3.5 and 3 more. These different versions can't be installed at the same time.

The solution( the one i use, maybe there are other ways) is to remove qt-qt3support "emerge -C qt-qt3support" and update "emerge -auDN world". This way al packages using qt-qt3support will be emerged using the same version of qt-qt3support. Repeat this for all complaining packages.

edit: typo's

Also those news items are usually worth reading. I use the command
Code:
eselect news read new

The actual error message is right before your quote, please post about 50 more lines.

useful when battering through a long overdue update:
start with:
emerge --keep-going -uNDa world
if halted by a failure to compile (as you were):
emerge --skipfirst --resume --keep-going -uNDa world
repeat until down to no problems or left with a hardcore problem that must be solved
valuable repair tools in addition to revdep-rebuild:
lafilefixer --justfixit
python-updater
perlcleaner all

Thanks a lot for help.
Now i tried the suggested
Code:
emerge --skipfirst --resume --keep-going -uNDa world

and all the time some errors occur. when i again run this command surprisingly more packages are emerged. it runs now for 2 days and more and more
packages are being installed. I always say Yes to the question if i want to emerge the suggested packages. Hopefully my stystem will not be trashed with packages i never use !?

it is only emerging packages in your world file and their dependencies, so no. The main source of errors in this situation involves the order in which packages are updated, ideally a package needed to build another package would be emerged first, all too often this is not the case.

could he not have simply unmasked that newer media-libs/jpeg ?

e.g.

Code:

mkdir -p /etc/portage/package.keywords
echo "media-libs/jpeg ~x86" >> /etc/portage/package.keywords/image
revdep-rebuild
