I cannot emerge anything on the Gentoo install or the System Rescue CD. This is what outputs:
Quote: | emerge dhcpcd
Calculating dependencies... done!
>>> Verifying ebuild manifests
>> Emerging (1 of 1) net-misc/dhcpcd-5.2.2
openpty failed: 'out of pty devices'
>>> Downloading 'http://mirror.csclub.uwaterloo.ca/gentoo-distfiles/distfiles/dhcpcd-5.2.2.tar.b2'

Resolving mirror.csclub.uwaterloo.ca... failed: Temporary failure in name resolution.
wget: unable to resolve host address "mirror.csclub.uwaterloo.ca"
(It repeats this output until it has attempted all of my mirrors, then:)
!!! Couldn't download 'dhcpcd-5.2.2.tar.bz2'. Aborting.

The easiest way will be copying the resolv.conf from your installation-cd into /etc:
- Change the terminal via Alt+F
- cp -L /etc/resolv.conf /mnt/gentoo/etc/
Afterwards, portage should be able to emerge the packages (resolv.conf contains dns-servers). Of course you can put your own dns-information into that file, too:
Code: | echo "nameserver ip.of.your.server" >> /mnt/gentoo/etc/resolv.conf | before chrooting or
Code: | echo "nameserver ip.of.your.server" >> /etc/resolv.conf | after chrooting.
Best regards,

No change. I can't emerge in the chrooted environment or in the actual install even though I modified that .conf file. |

Can you ping anything? Please post your /etc/resolv.conf here.
Best regards,

While chrooted in the System Rescue CD:
Code: | (chroot) sysresccd / # ping -c 3 http://www.google.com/
ping: unknown host http://www.google.com/ |
/etc/resolv.conf (while chrooted)
Quote: | # Generated by net-scripts for interface lo
nameserver 10.42.43.1 |

Quote: | # Generated by net-scripts for interface lo
nameserver 10.42.43.1 | Looks like you did not setup networking on the cd. Boot the cd and run net-setup or pppoe-setup or pptpclient (see section 3b of the handbook).
Code: | ping -c 3 http://www.google.com/ | should be Code: | ping -c 3 google.com | retry with the valid domain name to prove the chroot setup works
how are you connected? modem? ethernet router -> modem? adsl(ppp)? ppptp? |

It's connected to a router which uses my other laptop's wireless card.
Now resolv.conf looks like this:
Quote: | # Generated by dhcpcd from eth0
# /etc/resolv.conf.head can replace this line
nameserver 10.42.43.1
# /etc/resolv.conf.tail can replace this line |
That did it apparently. I was able to install dhcpcd by chrooting in the liveCD. Thank you, everyone. |
