Well... Unfortunately my first attempt to install gentoo didn't go as planned. It couldn't verify the root device. I'm not sure what this means? I have 250 gb of free space (and 250 gb of 3 Windows partitions). It said it could not find the root device type in "shell" or press "q" to skip? I don't think I did anything wrong yet? I just put in the CD booted it up and let some of it load |

Is this a problem booting the install/live cd, or when you try to boot into your installed system? _________________ Adopt an unanswered post today |

Sorry for the lack of information. It's from a minimal-install CD |

If the Gentoo minimal install CD isn't booting fully, you might have better luck with the SystemRescueCd. It's Gentoo-based and can be used just like the official install media with no modification at all to the Handbook procedures.

Remember that most of us do not reinstall Gentoo on a regular basis, so we do not have all the possible installation errors memorized. Whenever you have problems with early install, please provide the exact text of the failure, without paraphrasing. Ideally, give us the last 20 lines before the system stopped for input. Pictures of the display can be a good choice here. |

Also, when your box will be 100% ok, you should check the stage 4 or stage 5 backup method too. |
