I am trying to use irc from work.. however, they have certain ports blocked. Is there anyway to get around this in order to allow xchat to connect to the irc server??

you are most likely behind a NAT box and/or a hardware/software firewall that has those ports blocked.
ask your boss to forward them to your internal ip.

or were you asking if you could use another port to connect, instead?
not that i know of. it should be determined by the server.

I already asked them to let me out on the ports.. and they said they couldn't do it.. it would take to much effort etc.. :\

So I was wondering if somehow I could connect to the server on a diff port.. but I think you answered that in your second post..

You can do it with tunneling & proxies. Sorry I don't remember specific tools that can be used since it's been about 5 years since needing them :)
