Colored text is a very nice thing after a linux penguen welcomes you while booting. Please don't remove it _________________ Anyway it's all the same at the end...
Need help to get it working: "x-fi surround 5.1" |

answer to question 1: they stopped naming their kernels by zen version. instead the same version gets updated every time in git until a new vanilla kernel comes out. so, no more 2.6.38-zen0, instead 2.6.38-zen and if there's an update for the kernel the version number remains the same until 2.6.38.1 comes out. then it becomes 2.6.38.1-zen
so, there are a total of 3 .38 versions: 2.6.38-zen, 2.6.38.1-zen and 2.6.38.2-zen |

Please post the links for the first two, as I have the link already for 2.6.38.2-zen. I'd like to make seeds for them all. It's sort of a tradition.

Thanks for the link. Now I can run it on my personal sources, whether zen, or vanilla. Woohoo! You have made me happy to be a geek yet again.
Cheers,
Pappy
EDIT: I spoke too soon. The versions at that site are old. Anyone know where I can get something that will work with the .38 family??? /EDIT
/EDIT-2: apparently, I don't need to patch for this since 2.6.38.2-zen added it. Nice! Time to update again./EDIT-2 _________________ This space left intentionally blank, except for these ASCII symbols. |

If anyone's getting tired of zen might I suggest pf-sources.
https://github.com/pfactum/pf-kernel
http://pf.natalenko.name/
It's main advantage over zen seems to be that it's updated VERY promptly, has a reliable host, and is basically just a vanilla kernel with some of the more popular patches applied (BFQ, BFS).
I haven't been able to fetch zen for about a month so I assume it's dead (or my DNS is screwy), though possibly just the public server since I notice somebody is still making commits now and then on the cgit. I haven't checked the snapshots. |

if the main repo is down I can't update it: I got no git hooks configured for that so I'm trying it whenever I spot updates _________________ look for monty python channel on youtube |

there is another way to update the zen kernel without the git. grab the latest patch from http://downloads.zen-kernel.org/snapshots/
and then patch vanilla kernel with it. if you see that its updated, reverse the old patch with "patch -R -p1 < ./(nameofpatch)", delete the patch file and then apply the new patch. |

That warning's been removed in BFS 400. It was considered harmless. |

Does anybody else have problems with reiser4 on 2.6.38? On 2.6.37 everything works fine... |

negative on the reiser thing, havent had a kernel panic anymore with btrfs for a while.
did have one occurence of ehci_hcd saying "HC died" and poof there went my usb ports inoperable.
so when's the next ebuild coming up with a snapshot including BFS400? |

FYI, Con Kolivas answer on differences between bfs-376 and bfs-400.
for a snapshot patch to apply on 2.6.38 you need to issue a command like this from the git tree
Code: | git diff v2.6.38 master | xz -z -c > /tmp/2.6.38-zen-snapshot-patch.xz |
I'm trying to keep this updated with the mirror (so I have a downoad point for my needs)
