|
|
Hi there.
I just reinstalled gentoo, with the same kernel config, and for some reason, it is SOOO slow during boot, before it starts the init scripts.. It scrolls like a snail. Just one hour ago, before the reinstall, it was ok.
the reinstall was basically done in a root jail, and then transfered to the disk using the tar trick. something i've done about a gazillion times, so it's not that..
I've tried changing the mtrr value in grub.conf, to no avail.
Any ideas? _________________ pc-rhiakath ~ $ emerge -s happiness

Graphical frame buffers are always slow to me no matter how it's configured. Basically all my machines use native text mode, only one is my Dell laptop where text mode looks hideous, it uses the ATI radeon driver and scrolls decently.
You should make sure you're using the correct frame buffer driver and not using a generic one like VESA. Also sometimes settings change from version to version. Should check to make sure all the settings you thought should be checked are still checked. _________________ Intel Core i7 2700K/Radeon R7 250/24GB DDR3/256GB SSD

Make sure you're using the correct framebuffer driver. The VESA drivers will be abysmally slow no matter what; use either a card-specific one or a KMS-based one, and disable all the others. |

I'm using the same kernel .config as before. I have a laptop with the exact same config, and the framebuffer is fast as always.
This was fast a few days agora, until i reinstalled (but with the same config).
Gonna have to check the kernel config again... _________________ pc-rhiakath ~ $ emerge -s happiness

ok, I still don't get it. On my laptop, i have the same kernel config regarding framebuffer, etc etc. using uvesafb.
but on the laptop it scrolls fast! on the desktop, it's just SOOOO slow... It takes about 8 seconds to scroll thru all the garbage before starting the initscripts, during boot. _________________ pc-rhiakath ~ $ emerge -s happiness

Something's definitely wrong there... does it still go that slow if you force the desktop to use the same resolution as the laptop? |
