Posted: Wed Jun 16, 2010 11:26 pm Post subject: many "argument list too long" errors on boot |
|
|
i am putting gentoo on a x86 machine and am taking the hdd out and crosscompiling items on an amd64 one with linux32 chroot...
i was able to do this fine until i took the hdd out from the amd64 machine improperly (w/out unmounting partitions, etc) and now everytime i put the hdd back into its original box it coraks on booting the kernel with a first "cannot mount proc" than many "argument list too long" errors at the end of almost every single file it looks into upon boot. i dont know if there is a relation but thats the order in which it happened.
i dont know what to do.
i tried revdep-rebuild but:
Code: | main / # revdep-rebuild
* Configuring search environment for revdep-rebuild
/usr/bin/revdep-rebuild: line 1080: /usr/bin/tr: Argument list too long
/usr/bin/revdep-rebuild: line 667: /bin/sed: Argument list too long

* No search defined -- this is a bug.
/etc/init.d/functions.sh: line 218: /usr/bin/logger: Argument list too long |
also i get some weird errors on compiling some kernel changes:
Code: | AS arch/x86/boot/header.o
CC arch/x86/boot/version.o
LD arch/x86/boot/setup.elf
OBJCOPY arch/x86/boot/setup.bin

I would start with the basics. boot from a live cd and fsck each partition and badblocks the entire drive and take it from there. |

i second that
This one just stinks of a disk/fs problem
Code: |

i did the fsck and badblocks
Code: | main ~ # fsck -a /dev/sde4
fsck from util-linux-ng 2.16.2

chrooted back in:
Code: |
main / # revdep-rebuild

the kernel make and make_install went through fine however. i havent tried to boot it from its own machine yet but i suspect the same "argument list too long" errors.
anymore ideas? |

you need to use the "-f" switch.

all those files marked with "argument too long" show like this in the beggining. is this normal?

it still stinks of fs corruption to me. Have you tried not chrooting the partitions and just connecting the drive? Then check all partitions with fsck and even see if they are registering correctly in fdisk? To be honest.. if you've just installed gentoo, I'd consider flattening it and starting again. If you've disconnected the drive without unmounting (is the drive hot swappable?) and without powering down the system, this is the only outcome. If the drive isn't hot swappable, you may have damaged the drive itself. I've done this once myself and the drive was toast. |

I am not sure, but I guess your problem could be caused by the nonexistent /proc. Is / located on the damaged drive and does that contain an (empty) /proc directory? (Also, before you chroot you should mount /proc and /sys into the chroot). |
