Call of Duty Mordern Warfare 2

Has someone try to run this game with wine? Since it need Steam to play it i just want to know if someone of you have this Game working.

Starcraft 2

- To play Starcraft 2, you have to install wine 1.2 and a Kernel 2.6.32 or above 2.6.35-r4.
- I had no sound, but after activate the openal and esd Useflag of wine, it works.
- You can buy the game, create a battle.net account and add the game on your account. And download an Installer from there.
- Or you use your retail game. But the dvd has some hidden files so your installation will not work as usual. You have mount it manual with some options:
Code:
 mount -t udf -o ro,unhide,uid=1000 /dev/sr0 /mnt/cdrom

Hi CrisJumper,

I got it running with wine, but it is extremly slow (on a amd phenom2 955 with nvidia GTX275). Steam also works with wine but iirc i had some problems installing MW2 with Steam, so i copied my Windows MW2 installation to appropiate wine directory. I tried it in febr. 2010 and june 2010 with unstable wine releases.

Wolfenstein runs perfectly under wine, and Starcraft 2 is running great since wine-1.2 came out.

StartCraft 2 should be good AFAIK, because I played the game a couple of hours, the brother of my gilrfriend is a betatester, so I was able to play maybe 5-10 hours and it's better then Starcraft 1 , but you still have the same feeling.

Today i got my Starcraft2 CE...

but i can't install the game from the dvd. Maybe its an issue about user rights or a wrong udev configuration? If i mount the cdrom i got this:

Code:
/mnt/cdrom $ ls -lah
insgesamt 2,4M
drwxr-xr-x  3  501 dialout  440 25. Mai 06:16 .
drwxr-xr-x 21 root root    4,0K 27. Mai 19:07 ..
-rwx------  1  501 dialout 2,4M 25. Mai 06:16 Installer.exe
drwx------  3  501 dialout   88 25. Mai 06:16 StarCraft II Installer.app

And i cant execute this! Wine can't open the Installer.exe

But its still an old Version of wine, i don't try Wine 1.2, cause i know about the kernelbug and there is no Kernel 2.6.35-r4 in the tree, so i just wait and install the game in Windows. I just, would, try if the installer is a different from the beta and if it runs with cedega/wine.

...to be continue

Edit: Bye the way, torchlight working really amazing i installed with cedega and just have to add a settings.txt file and add some folders, that the game "save" my success :)

Have you registered your game's DVD code @ battle.net? If you do that you can then just download the digital version and it should install for you without a hitch.

Thank you Chopinzee,

i will do this! The Installer on the DVD (in windows) won't install, it "dial out" and ask a Server for the time which say: "Noo installation, just wait to the 27.7.2010" :)

Yeah, I'm picking mine up at the local brick & mortar shop on Tuesday. I'll be adding my code to my battle.net account and installing digitally in wine-1.2. I had some fun with the multiplayer beta in wine, until they closed it... but I really want to play the single player campaign.

Download 12 GB is too much for me, so search the net for this.. if i mount the drive with this command, i could install the game from dvd with wine.

The European servers allow the installation now. But i don't have a new kernel. the gentoo-sources are still on 2.6.34-r2 but i will need a 2.6.35-r4, to have a stable play?

Should i just download the kernl-source? Without the gentoo-patchset or just wait?

Regards

Chris

Um, do you need anything specific from the gentoo patchset? If not you could just emerge the vanilla sources.

Thanks, i will try the vanilla-sources. I don't really know what is different in the gentoo-sources, so i just ask cause i am to lazy for reading it, i will play ;D

Quote:

Oh. vulnerable.. so i will just use it if i want to play.

Some posters on winehq.org just say it runs fine. Platium-Rating :)

See you later!

Edit: Now i decide use the gentoo-sources 2.6.32, and play the game for a while, i got some texture bugs in the tutorial but not in the Missions. The game runs fine. I have medium Settings and still Shaodwos on and fog.. its nice. But in one mission where some zerg attack my base, the game slow down. Its ok and i am satisfied with this gameplay. But its just "sad" to see the low quality in some cinematic, if you saw it on some preview or movies on the blizzard homepage. But its astonish to see that some film is no motion picture, its a "live rendering" or a scripted situation. Like that where one spaceship take me out of my base and rescue my crew from a zerg attack. Maybe i try to downsize something or buy more ram, or start the Game in its own X-Session and not from my fluxbox.

But for me? the game runs fine as CNC (3)- Tiberium Wars.... ok the graphic is still better in starcraft2.

--[solved]--

Hey,
at the moment I am little helpless: I installed StarCraft 2 without any problems, but I have difficulties to start the game. Sometimes it starts, sometimes it doesn't, sometimes it crashes befor I get to the point where I log in. A few times it seemed to do the following:
- change the Windows-version between Vista and 7
- wineserver -k

I solved the soundproblem temporarily by overriding "mmdevapi" and disabling it.

Wine:
Code:
Installed versions:  1.2!t(10:41:48 27.07.2010)(X alsa cups dbus esd gecko jpeg lcms ldap mp3 ncurses openal opengl oss perl png ssl threads truetype xml -capi -custom-cflags -fontconfig -gnutls -gphoto2 -gsm -hal -jack -nas -pulseaudio -samba -scanner -test -win64 -xcomposite -xinerama)

At the moment, I use 2.6.34-r1.

Here are the messages from my shell, when I start StarCraft 2 (wine .wine/drive_c/Programme/StarCraft\ II/StarCraft\ II.exe):

=> the game crashes after a few seconds, so it does not load at all.

These two errors seem to occur randomly - I didn't change anything, I just tried to start the game a few times.

Has anyone an idea? Help would be appreciated.

Best regards,
Jimini

Edit with a little update: now I am trying the 2.6.32-r7-sources, and the first two attempts to start the game worked fine. Until now I didn't want to believe, that my problems could have been caused by the wrong kernel version - but I keep testing!

Edit #2: okay, seems as this crap was my fault - 2.6.32-r7 works fine. I chose "Windows 7" in winecfg and I also disabled "mmdevapi", as I already mentioned.

SC2 works reasonably well for me, but random crashes abound. Typically i find it very very temperamental to start up. All the recommended fixes for sound actually cause it to crash (i have stuttering, i blame pulseaudio as usual :p)

However once it runs, performance is good with everything set at ultra ;) quite a nice game.

- messing with the O/S version for me causes start-up crashes (xp is fine)
- changing any audio options, bitrate, Alsa/OSS, emulation/full cause a start-up crash (defaults is fine)
- patches listed in wine app db don't do squat atm
- kernel patches don't help either

Running wine 1.2, once the match is started or your logged in the game, its stable. So if your looking to run it on Linux, I do recommend it.

That's the only choice ;)

Bugger of a digital download though... still have another gig plus to go (nearly 7 gigs total).
Wine craps out when trying to install from the DVD so I'm happy about battle.net's policy of allowing the input of game codes to = digital install option.

If you set the correct mount options it will/should install ok? mount -o ro,unhide,uid=1000 /dev/cdrom /mnt/cdrom

Remember to substitute an appropriate uid or add a guid.

Indeed, full time Linux here for over 6 years (dual boot for lots longer) not looking back, got pretty much everything I ever wanted to play running. Wine has come a long way since it only ran win 3.1 notepad :D

Ive been doing more tweaking/patching but checking the official SC2 forums today, i was really surprised we got it running so easy under wine, there is literally hundreds of people getting crashes, BSOD'S, overheating, corruption etc.. ( ref: http://us.battle.net/sc2/en/forum/topic/145934624)

So I'm really would like to play SC2 on Linux, but even using the right version of Wine and Kernel and installed 100%, I am unable to run the game.

Versions:

Code:

[fb@cascao StarCraft II]$ wine --version
wine-1.2
[fb@cascao StarCraft II]$ uname -a
Linux cascao 2.6.32-gentoo-r6 #1 SMP Sat Feb 20 15:16:51 BRST 2010 x86_64 AMD Phenom(tm) 9550 Quad-Core Processor AuthenticAMD GNU/Linux
[fb@cascao StarCraft II]$

If I try to start:

Code:

[fb@cascao StarCraft II]$ wine StarCraft\ II.exe
err:virtual:map_image failed to set 60000020 protection on section .text, noexec filesystem?

The wine log is showing "noexec filesystem?" , but I already run " chmod -R 777 StarCraft\ II/ " and even tried to run with root user, I always get the same error.

What should I do ?

What are your specs?
For me the performance is dreadfull, I get 20 fps on lowest settings and on win7 I get 70 on ULTRA!

boaglio,

did you check out the winehq.org application database entry or user Post comments? And i hope you have an official Version... ;)

Maybe the no execution-filesystem could be an "noexec"-Flag on the device/place where your wine-folder is installed (/home?) see your fstab

@cst

It runs fine here too, maybe i have to elevate that it much slower on Linux, but if you have much more power you can neglect the slowdown effect.

I have a Quad Core and an Nvidia GTS 250 with 1 GB Memory on my Card. But only 2 GB Ram.

Would be nice if people that are able to play any map on ultra would post their specs.

I'm on a GTX260M, i7 at 3.2ghz and 4gb ram. On the last terran map I get around 25fps with low on everything. This is with compiz on though, but there's no huge performance increase with anything. Got the latest nvidia driver (256.44), but my kernels not as updated.

Realy poor perfs :( setting ultra 1080 with 2,96GHz Intel Core2 , nvidia 470 (drivers 256.44 ) 2.6.35 ...i get 15/20 fps ( test under crossover game 9.1.0)

Some trick for nvidia 's users !! Don't work for me , no way for play with ultra setting .

On Nvidia make sure you set 'UseGLSL' to disabled (see wiki.winehq.org/UsefulRegistryKeys) it should provide a huge boost (I remember 30% or so in the demo). Disabling this option won't impact image quality because on Nvidia hardware we support shader model 3.0 with and without GLSL (without GLSL it uses nvidia specific opengl extensions).

even on 470? now thats really bad
you cant say it runs fine if high-end GPU cant handle it
I would not give this a gold in winehq

How do you measure your fps in SC2?
At the moment, I have almost everything on "medium", the performance could be worse.
My system: Intel Core i5 750, Geforce GT240 (bottleneck!), 4G RAM.

Best regards,
Jimini
