I am using KDE4 and the notifier widget detects a DVD when it is installed. However, I can not find the path to the DVD to setup a DVD player. Any help would be appreciated

)I have tried Gnome
) I verified that there is no /dev/srx on the system with x being any integer
) my /dev directory has 673 items in it.
)the directory /media is empty
) this is an old machine with an old gentoo configuration (up to date)

udev appears to be installed and the kernel configuration is consistent with the Gentoo udev installation guide

Any help would be appreciated

I tried
Quote:

udevadm info --export-db | grep -i dvd

and I had no observable difference from when the disk was installed and when the disk was not installed.

I did notice that dmesg changed. When I inserted a disk I got:

Quote:

hda: command error: status=0x51 { DriveReady SeekComplete Error }
hda: command error: error=0x54 { AbortedCommand LastFailedSense=0x05 }
hda: possibly failed opcode: 0xa0
end_request: I/O error, dev hda, sector 16596576
Buffer I/O error on device hda, logical block 4149144
Buffer I/O error on device hda, logical block 4149145

I am wondering, is it possible that there is a conflict between devfs and udev or posiible with some older /dev manager?

When I start from the "Devices Recently Plugged In" widget and I eject the disk from the file manager, the tray only remains fully open for about 1.5 seconds, then closes.

My next action will be to upgrade the kernel to the newest gentoo kernel. I am currently at linux-2.6.32-gentoo-r7 and it is a mostly monolithic kernel.

There is a rumor that automounting of devices that use the legacy drive adapter drivers is either deprecated or gone. Perhaps switching to the libata drivers will give you what you want.

if you change to libata the cdrom device name will be /dev/sr0 ... and hard drives /dev/sda ... , edit fstab and grub.conf as needed
Find your adapters in the red

Would additionally suggest emerging device-kit and policykit.

Thank you, mplayer can now see the DVD (it finds the title). mplayer still does play the movie, but that is a different issue. I want to play with it/search for a while before asking for help.

The only change I made to the kernel was:

< > ATA/ATAPI/MFM/RLL support --->

Thank you for your help

edit:

The DVD trays now stay open when I eject a disk
