Is there a fast way to take my system back to stage 3 w/out starting from scratch and not using stage 3 CD.

I installed KDE and a whole mess of stuff and realized that - I did things out of order and things are in a mess so I would really just liek to clean out the system. I dont want to have to recompile everything tho as i started from stage 1 tarball and everything has been compiled on/for this system. Does emerge -C work well? thanks for any info.

you can always just do:
emerge -c kde
or
emerge unmerge kde

do that for each application, then go back and recompile them in order...
I am curious to what you mean you didn't do them in order, and the system is all out of order?

well i think i should have setup alsa first - before any WM's basically my sound is hosed - I built my kernel w/ out some options that i wanted and i dont feel like rebuilding kernel - nvidia - alsa again i'd rather start from stage 3 emerge -p -c kde give only kde base and not the entire dependency tree. Im almost to the point of just reinstalling .....fron stage 1 ....again :? my config files are in shambles from not backing them up and editing them trying to get ALSA to work. In fact im not sure i even want to use KDE again because of the problems w/ it and ALSA i've been having. My Echo GINA card has special compile instructions so i probably wont build that driver ....i'll jsut use my onboard sound instead.

just back up your files that are important and then start from stage1 and do it nice and slowly :D

Why dont you just re-do your whole install from stage3?
