Has anyone managed to get this to work? The install works fine, but when I run Steam.exe, it says it fails to load the library Steam.dll, which happens to be in the same directory as the executable. Anyone know of a workaround for this? |

I have never heard of this game. Where can you get it? Is it free? Can you post a link?

Steam is the new content and authentication engine from Valve software.

Sorry I don't have wine installed so I can't tell you what is going on. |

Just FYI there is a Linux version of Steam too. I think it's only for the dedicated HL server though. |

Yeah, it is. I'd like to get the regular client working, though. |

Bluntly put, no, it does not work.
As for the rest of you, Steam is the new online "authorization" system that allows people to connect to Half Life (and HL2 when it comes out) games online hence replacing the WON ID system. It is crap. Bluntly put. I haven't had any luck getting this to work via Wine or WineX however I have brought it up for a vote on WineX and at this time I still need 3 people to back me up.
The Beta version did work at one point in time a while back by merely putting in a few DLLs and setting them to native, unfortunately this... "non beta release" (probably meant alpha and not final. HA.) rare works... (see below)
Funny thing is however, that a majority of people who are using this new "improved system" can barely get it to work on Windows too (mainly because it crashes alot, redownloads your entire Half Life folder, causes certain mods to crash upon entry, uses alot of net activity for non net required items (yes, you need Steam authenticity to run a friggin LAN or Single Player game.)
So in conclusion: will it work in Linux? No. Will it work in Windows? Toss a coin, heads - it'll work. |

It sounds like great fun for us unlucky people on 56k. And authenticating local or single player games is just a piece of shit. I wasn't planning to play online anyway, but apparently I have to install the bloody thing just to play the sp game. Wonderful Valve should concentrate on making games instead of wasting time with this kind of thing. _________________ Per Ardua Ad Astra

no doubt steam is a load of crap - but we will have to get it to work if we want to play cs 1.6 or 2.0.
I added my vote for steam on transgamings site - 2 more needed..... _________________ "Life would be so much easier if we could see the source code" |

What cracks me up is that valve has never actually had a successful steam deployment. It's their new authentication and delivery mechanism, but it doesn't work. The servers get overloaded every time, the application only sometimes works for windows users....
It doesn't even work, but they're forcing it down our throats. bleh. And with an attitude of "screw all non-windoze users".
I have lived off of Counter-Strike that last 2 years for r&r. But now.... Valve sux. No more CS for me. And I'm not buying HL2. It's garbage now -- all of it. I'm not going to waste my time trying to get Valve's (HL) game to work on my boss system, when there are some other pretty-dang-good counter-terrorism games out there that will run native on my OS.
...and Steam authentication for LAN games?? come on.
Valve may not miss my $50, but they will miss the $50 x 5000+ linux users who say "screw this".
And I'm not going to buy it for windows either.
Cheers |

Steam starts fine here, with a out of the box installation of Wine.
My first problem though was no text, fixed it by copying my dads Fonts directory from his WinXP installation..
Now the only problem i have is that Steam cant connect with any Steam Servers..
Network and everything works perfectly, because i can connect to irc with mIRC!
Any ideas to that? |

hmm I may try this. I used to like counter-strike and natural selection, then valve got gayer than they were...Too many of my friends still play to ignore it completely though and since they have 10 of my precious dollars already I may as well use it. |

Steam is riddled with DRM styled crap, It is going to be a pain to get to work. I wouldnt be suprised at all if tried to come up with a way to see if it was being emulated in linux or something in the near future and locked you out with an ambiguous error. _________________ waka waka

i used this how-to, but i cant get it to work, something im missing, i did exactly what i was told to do (i found the forum discussion afterwards this how-to was created), but it just does not connect to steam network. but, according to the forums, it generally works.
if someone could managed to play, could he please wirte down the steps from a installed-from-scratch wine? i have no idea anymore...
probably, if someone gets this to run, the joy will only last till april next year, when steam latest becomes pay2play |

You guys should stop pulling bull out of the air and posting it. Steam will never be pay to play, its just replacing WON and alleviating our need to wait in line at fileplanet to get a patch.
It had a rocky start, hell I even bitched up a storm about it. But as of right now it works just fine on windows, I play CS and NS on it (with the steam ns beta) all the time.
I don't have gentoo installed on my gaming machine (yet), but I hope they get it working soon for you guys.
Don't be such pessimits, Valve is in serious trouble right now with the HL2 source code leak and the beta leak and stuff. If Valve as a company falls due to the recent trouble, it will be a sad day for the entire pc gaming community. |

ok, i cant prove it, but i can make my thoughts. valve said definitivly before cs1.6 was released, there will be a non-Steam-Client, they broke, Valve said definitivly they will bring HL2 this year, they broke (and not only to the reason of source code leaking)
i mean, why the hell wouldn't a company take advantage of their systems? why dont they want to make money? they have a really high amount of payment for steam, just calculate traffic, space, support. why shouldnt they force the players to pay for their system, whne there are, i dont know, 500.000 people playing the game? if only 10% will pay, perhaps 10$ per month like any online RPG, that would be 500.000 thousand dollars a month... no company would reject this only for patience...
anyways, they can use this money for making cs more professional (and a natve linux client ), then i will pay, but im at first interessted in getting it to work with wine. |
