I'm upgrading from my current AMD Phenom(tm) II X4 965 to a dual Opteron 6128 system. Will this process work:

  1. Modify make.conf so that my march=i686
  2. emerge -e system && emerge -e world
  3. Install new hardware
  4. Modify make.conf so that my march=native
  5. emerge -e system && emerge -e world

I've read that AMD is removing the 3DNow! feature from its newer CPU's. Will this impact my upgrade process?

yep, that looks like it should work.

Also, don't forget to select a generic cpu type in the kernel when you rebuild that before upgrading your hardware.

will work, but causes a lot of overhead...
phenom II and opteron are closely related.

this should work
1. modifiy kernel to support new hardware
2. install new hardware
3. switch to -march=native and adjust MAKEOPTS to a resonable value
4a. (optional) rebuild toolchain
4b. emerge -e world

out of curiousity: why are you running 32-bit on such a system?

cheers

Currently I'm running 64-bit. I just wasn't sure how far back I should go during the upgrade. I didn't find any generic 64-bit march configurations while reading the GCC documentation. In the end I'll be running march=native 64-bit on this system.

I think "going back" to a 32 bit system is a bad idea, not sure it even works at all. Surely march=k8 would do? And even that is overkill from what I understand :)

the generic 64-bit march is -march=x86_64 -mtune=generic.
I think it cannot get more generic....

The Opteron 6128s are the exact same microarchitecture and generation as the Phenom IIs, so you don't need to change your make.conf at all. You may need to recompile your kernel to support different hardware if you've stripped out drivers for anything your old system didn't have, but otherwise you'd be good to just swap in the new board and CPUs.
