I just found that a new version of linux-headers is available
Code:

root@localhost mythtv # emerge -up world

These are the packages that I would merge, in order:

Calculating world dependencies ...done!
[ebuild     U ] sys-kernel/linux-headers-2.4.19-r1 [2.4.19]
[ebuild     U ] sys-apps/baselayout-1.8.6.10-r1 [1.8.6.8-r1]

root@localhost mythtv #

I'm running the linux-2.4.20-gentoo-r7 gentoo-sources kernel. I know that glibc uses the linux-headers and the version does not have to match your kernel version. But what about if you want to use a 2.6 series kernel? Are the 2.4.19 headers still good even then?

A second question. Since the linux-headers are for glibc do you have to recompile anything after emerging a new linux-headers version?

Finally, I thought version numbers usually went something like

0.9
1.0 rc 1
1.0 rc 2
1.0 rc n
1.0 (aka final)

emerge -up world is trying to update my linux-headers from 2.4.19 to 2.4.19-r1. I can only assume that the "r" does not stand for "release canidate" like "rc" does. What is the version numbering scheme in this case?

thanks,
Cedar

Yeah noticed the same update requests from emerge as well...

The update pulls down the whole 2.4.19 kernel source, which for those on dialup will be a real bummer, just to get a few kb of linux headers ;)

But i'm also curious why linux-headers is out of date with the kernel you are using, I believe on some distros

/usr/include/linux is a symlink to /usr/src/linux/include
/usr/include/asm is a symlink to /usr/src/linux/include/asm

Or something like that....

I've done the updates, but not sure why this package is done this way?

[ignore] forum is slow as hell, and now it even makes doubleposts by itself :/

That's why

About the -r? version system:
This is how Gentoo keeps track of ebuild versions
It has nothing to do with the package version.
