|
|
I'm getting a new computer today, and I've been planning on running Gentoo on it. So I went to the homepage to download the latest install CD for amd64 and discovered that there wasn't one. I just get a 404. It's been 4 years since I last did a fresh install, so I thought maybe it'd changed, and checked the Handbook.
But the Handbook says
Quote: |
You can download any of the Installation CDs from one of our mirrors. The Installation CDs are located in the releases/amd64/autobuilds/current-iso/ directory.
|
I go to that directory and end up with a 404. The download page says that builds are supposed to be produced weekly, but if they aren't, you can check the autobuilds/ directory for older builds. Doing that, I find 4 stage 3 tarballs (the latest built on June 17), but not a single CD image, anywhere.
Does anyone know where the images are? |

Hi Timmer,
No need to use the Gentoo iso.
You can use any Livecd/Livedvd to install Gentoo.
Gerard. _________________ To install Gentoo I use sysrescuecd.Based on Gentoo, has firefox to browse Gentoo docs and mc to browse (and edit) files.
The same disk can be used for 32 and 64 bit installs.
You can follow the Handbook verbatim.

He's right though...there's links all over gentoo.org to the download locations for the amd64 autobuilds and they're broken, the x86 ones work though, it just seems like the AMD64 current-iso directory was deleted. (go here and try clicking amd64 http://www.gentoo.org/main/en/where.xml )
Above poster is correct though, the livecd you use doesn't matter all that much, and TBH the gentoo livecd kinda sucks. You can jump up a few folders to here
http://distfiles.gentoo.org/releases/amd64/
and get the older releases of the livecd/dvd , but personally I use system rescue CD for EVERY install now, it's gentoo based itself (and pretty much designed for installing gentoo).

Get the x86 iso, it has both 32 bit and 64 bit kernels on it, when booting type "rescue64" for the boot option. |

I suppose I never thought about the fact that the Live CD is really completely separate from the install. It pretty much just needs to be able to format a drive, and then download a stage onto the hard drive, doesn't it? Hmm.
I could just use my 2006.0 CD then, except hat it probably doesn't have proper wireless drivers on it. Still though, should probably fix the links.

Just writing in to say that the rescue CD (actually a USB in this case) method is working. not done yet (work and sleep got in the way), but I was happily typing up a make.conf this morning. |

This is still not a solution to the problem-- are the amd64 minimal installcd autobuilds failing? How long has this been happening? Am I the only one who sees this as a major problem?
I'm trying to find some official acknowledgement of this issue, coming up dry. |

I agree. And therefore, it's not yet marked as solved. |

The Gentoo LiveCD and LiveDVD AMD64 images need kernel staging drivers implemented into the ISO as several newer wireless adapters DO WORK in Linux with the current staging drivers. This would save alot of headaches, and stop the waste of CD-R's. >.< _________________ Linux. Freedom. Power. |
