Hello,

Since I upgraded to 4.4.5, I am no longer able to add any application shortcut on my desktop via the "add to desktop" item of the context menu obtained by clicking right on any application of the Application Menu Launcher.
I must have missed something but where ? :?

Upgraded from which version?

Since 4.0 you can't put things directly on the desktop by default, but it can be enabled as an option. But I assume you know this, and that it's a different issue.

I updated from 4.3.5 (x86_64)

EDIT : Well it appears that I cannot add any application shortcut to the desktop WHEN I configure KDE to get :
Multiple Desktops AND Different activity for each desktop.

When I un-activate the different activity for each desktop feature then all the shortcut I had unsuccessfully tried to add, appear ! 8O

I do it this way ( with multiple desktops and different activities):

Unlock widgets.
Go to the desktop where you want to install the shortcut icon.
Set the start button to "Kickoff style".
Go to the program you want to put on that particular desktop
and drag it unto the desktop where you want it.
Lock the widgets again!

Gerard.

Grrrrreat thanks gerard82 ! 8)

That did it ! Adding application shortcuts to a desktop when [multiple desktops] && [different activities] is actually possible that way !

There seems then to be some kind of bug with the classic menu style I am used to.

When kde4 replaced kde3.5 I liked the idea of different desktops for different activities idea a lot.
But on the whole I feel that the kde devs have gone overboard on cramming as much visual effects
as they could think of into it to the detriment of userfriendliness.
Kde 3.5 had no Lock/Unlock Widgets.
Kde4 needs it (still?) because they would wander all over the place.

I have one desktop that doesn't belong to the dedicated group.
I installed "Rawtherapee" from svn.
When I try to get the icon for it to show up on my Grafix desktop it fails.
However on the non dedicated DT it shows up fine.
Kscd the kde cdplayer is still a mess bugreports are not touched.
Gerard.

Indeed !
A desktop has to be fully functionnal, bug-free and fully user friendly ! :!:
If one wants visual effects or, as they name it nowdays, eyescandyness... , there are things such as compiz for this !
I do not see any interest in the half-eyecandyness KDE devs spent some time on !
When one want visual effects, it has to be 100%... flashy
