I noticed that abiword(latest incarnation~2.0) comes with a file named "abi-nautilus-viw.xml". I was wondering how one tells nautilus to use this "view" for displaying various document formats.
I copied this file into (under gentoo) /usr/share/gnome-2.0/ui, which is where I found the other "view" xml files.....But Nautilus does not seem to "see" it or "know" that its available- I also looked in gconf-no clues there and the Nautilus help file proved mighty unhelpful....

I remember once clicking on a ".doc" file in nautilus and an embedded version of abiword appeared in the right hand pane of the nautilus window. Unfortunately I cannot remember where I saw this(perhaps under another Distro(I have 5 installed))....

any help would be appreciated....

If you right click a .doc and select "Open With->Other Viewer". In this dialog you can select the "View as Word Processor" view and set it as default for .doc files. Although, when I recently upgraded to AbiWord-2.0.0 the embedded abiword doesn't seem to display documents correctly. But, that's how you select a viewer anyway.

Good Luck,

Doug
