genkernel issue and questions

I'm having some problems getting genkernel to do what I want. When I was installing the system, at one point the time clock was way out and I suspect this is hurting me now.

The system was originally installed with source tree: gentoo-sources-2.4.20-r6. R7 has since been released and I have it installed. I suspect my time clock was out when I emerged R7. Anyway, it still insists on generating the r6 kernel.

For what it's worth, I have a second system (that I'm using to type this) I installed at the same time and it had no difficulty upgrading to the r7 kernel. I don't think I had a clock issue on the other system, though.

I tried:

emerge -C gentoo-sources
emerge gentoo-sources

That seems to have cleaned out the r6 source tree but now genkernel just craps out.
