How can i get my system to power down my monitor automatically when its not used?

I'm currently using KDE3, but may move to XFCE4 soon, and I when to power managment set it to turn off my monitor and it does, but only sometimes.

I then downloaded apmd and started that and it made no differene.

What do I need to do?

In my XF86Config-4 file this is what I have

Section "Monitor"
Identifier "Monitor0"
HorizSync 31.5 - 91.1
VertRefresh 60 - 85
Option "DPMS"

what does it mean if that option is there but there is no "on" after it?

I'll put it in but I can't restart my X yet so I'll only be able to test it in a couple of hours

Code:

$ xset dpms <standby_value> <suspend_value> <off_value>

values are in units of seconds
