I got qemu/kqemu/qemulator set up and it's a bit slow. On this same machine, under Ubuntu, with the same program and same settings, it ran the same WinXP vm lightning quick. I was wondering if anyone could give me some tips to speed things up for this vm under Gentoo.

Use qemu-kvm if your CPU supports it, that should speed up a lot. Is th kqemu module loaded?

I was just working on setting up qemu-kvm and I have it working with kvm compiled into the kernel. MUCH faster. I have a couple of questions, though:

1. After adding my regular user to group kvm I'm still getting permission denied errors. I have to start kvm as root. What did I miss?

2. Using tightvnc to view my vm, how do I switch the cursor focus to the vm? When the mouse is over the vm window, it moves the vm cursor, but it's not in sync and I often find the mouse leaving the edge of the vm window and going back out into my host OS, which is annoying.

Some device (/dev/kvm at least, if I remember correctly) files need to be owned by the kvm group. You can set those permissions with udev if needed.

No clue about VNC, but if you use the SDL interface you can just click into the window (no seamless mode) and leave it by pressing Ctrl-Alt.

I figured out SDL - just enable the use flag and now I don't need VNC.

I still haven't figured out the permissions for /dev/kvm. I tried to chgrp and chown on it, but I'm still getting permission denied errors for my regular user. How do I correctly give ownership of /dev/kvm to the kvm group? I feel dumb asking, since I know the command, but it didn't work.
