boot fails immediately after bootloader

I'm just trying to finish up my gentoo install (first time installing it on this particular machine, it had debian on it before).

I installed and configured grub. When booting up, I get the grub menu, and am able to select the kernel to load, and then the screen goes blank and the computer reboots. This happens everytime. I've tried unemerging, and re-emerging grub with no luck.

I also just tried Lilo with the same experience. I selected the kernel to boot to, and it says "loading linux....." and then it reboots the computer.

I'm able to use the live CD to chroot back into the computer and everything seems to work fine within that, I just can't boot to it! I followed the instructions for installing lilo and grub from the x86 installation manual.

I'd appreciate some help if anyone has some ideas. And if you need additional information, let me know.
