i made a post earlier about not being able to play swg at college due to firewall security. i talked to my administrator and he had this to say "If you supply us with specifics as to which IP addresses and ports the game needs access to, we'll look into opening a hole in the firewall." How can I tell which IP's and ports it needs. |

Use Ethereal (www.ethereal.com) to monitor the ports the program requires (lots of work), or see if anyone else has figured out which ones to use (looking through Google). As for IPs, maybe firing off an email to someone at LucasArts and just directly ask? Or see if the sysadmin will just open all the ports that you want from your computer without limiting the desination IPs, I guess. There are binaries of Ethereal for Windows too, if you want to go that route - that program can monitor activity on any IP that is in your segment of the network, so just don't use it to sniff other people's unencrypted passwords to their pr0n sites. If the sysadmin doesn't want to do that, or if LucasArts isn't helpful, Ethereal should also tell you what IPs the packets are heading to as well.
I know how you are feeling - my home ISP blocks traffic like that all the time. Just be happy that you can actually talk with the admin - the !#*%!@$ at Prairie iNet just brush you off.
Sigh. |
