Kuroo was supposed to be revived as a GSoC, right?
Some projects, like the NetworkManager integration have had fairly good documentation during the development, and I've been able to both keep a up to date with what's happening and use it.
But Kuroo? I know next to nothing about it's status, and I was looking forward to trying it. (And potentially convince a new person or two that Gentoo isn't that dangerous ;) )

Who knows anything? :)

Thanks :)

I've seen the blog, but it not quite as informative as I'd like. I mean, it's over now, so I'd be very curious as to what has happened.
From the GSoC website: "August 23: Final results of GSoC 2010 announced"
So, were are the results? It could ofc be that the project never amounted to much, but that would be good to know too.

Maybe I'll try dropping the student an e-mail :)

kuroo has nearly been completed during the soc project. Cazou completed the porting to qt4 and it is mostly working. There are still a few bugs to iron out before it is ready to integrate the new portage interface we were also creating. There is a major --unmerge bug that needs fixing, then it should be stable enough to migrate the code to the new portage interface.

As for porthole, I've been kinda neglecting it lately, I've been too busy with some other projects including mentoring for kuroo and coding on layman and portage as part of the kuroo project.

If you want to do some testing and help report/track down any bugs, it is available in the kuroo overlay in layman. Beware that it is still a little buggy and not guaranteed to not mess up your system.

Moved from Portage & Programming to Unsupported Software as it's not currently in the Portage tree, it can be moved back if and when it returns.

^Me too. I thought the UI was well-designed. Even if one prefers to do the actual installation via the command line, Kuroo was a nice GUI package browser.

Update. We have phased out the kuroo overlay and now have a new gentoo-guis overlay.

The kuroo4-9999 ebuild has been updated there with the new EAPI=3 requirement for the kde4 eclasses.

So if you had the kuroo overlay installed, add the gentoo-guis overlay and delete the kuroo overlay.

And if you have any problems, there are usually several of us around in #gentoo-guis IRC channel.

Since no one else has said anything, I through my $.02 out.
No. If you half to ask, you are not ready to deal with with overlay software. Besides, if kuroo goes buggy on you you will get to keep all the pieces and that is a mess that might not be easily cleaned up. Do you think you are ready to deal with breakages in your package management system and the packages it installs? When you can honestly answer "yes" or "I don't mind reinstalling everything from scratch" then you are in a position to use experimental package management software.

A couple things. Sorry, I've been quite busy and haven't checked these forums much lately.

Kuroo is not that unstable that it would mess up your system. It may however crash or have other display bugs that will not affect your package manager and installled packages.

That said, you may not be ready for working with overlays and helping debug problems encountered. So, I agree with penguin swordmaster there. Perhaps wait awhile to get more familiar with gentoo. It is a continual learning experience. But if you want to try it. I would suggest you join the #gentoo-guis irc channel on the freenode network. Ask your questions/post your troubles there (be patient for an answer). There are several kde/qt people hanging out there along with the kuroo maintainer. The kuroo maintainer does not frequent these forums often.

As for porthole, it is a gtk+ app, no it does not have a qt/kde frontend, nor do I want to make one. But there have been many people that use it on kde systems without problems. To maintain a kde/qt look there use to be a qt/gtk theme for kde that maintained a very close or same look for gtk+ apps as the regular qt ones. From what I understand that theme is now part of kde4 and not a separately installed package. For details of how to set it up you will have to ask some kde/qt folk. I would suggest the desktop forum topic. Search for it first as there is likely at least one thread about it with the answer already.

Probably because none of them came close to being a comprehensive frontend for portage. porthole (developed by our much loved dear ol' dol-sen ;) ) was the most complete IMHO.

john-doe There likely will never be a complete frontend for the gentoo package-managers (there are currently 3 choices). There is also little reason to make every option and action available via the gui. The main reason is there are very few users that would ever use most of them. Also there are several options that would not make sense for a gui as they are cli (command line interface) oriented.

The guis frontends are best used for browsing the available packages and versions, having the most common data about them ready at a click of the mouse, etc..
The fact that they also allow you to merge, unmerge and update packages is an added convienience. Certainly not the most important feature.

Then install layman and add the gentoo-guis overlay, then install kuroo4. If you have any troubles with it, then re-read my earlier post about joining the gentoo-guis irc channel to ask for help, etc.. It is a "live" ebuild which means it downloads the latest source and compiles, installs it. It is nearly ready for regular release tarball and version. There alikely some quirks you will come across, so help out the maintainer and report any you come across that do not already have a bug filed.

[Edit] I see from another of your posts in a different forum thread that you are trying kuroo already.
